Actually the Reuter's report says gun control in Australia works. This is just amnesty for turning in illegal firearms that people still have.

The 1996 gun laws and associated buyback scheme were neither a success nor a failure. The murder rate by firearm was reduced drastically, yes, but the overall murder rate in the three years after the change went down at the same slow pace as the murder rate in the three years preceding it. Same applies to the suicide rate. People just used different means to achieve the same ends.

Similar can be said of mass killings. Since 1996 36 people were killed in three separate arson attacks, 5 in an attack using a blunt instrument (no precise description available), 8 when a woman killed her seven children and one niece with a knife, and less than a month ago someone gassed himself his wife and their two children. Oh, and just over two years ago a man killed his wife, their two children before blowing his own head off with his legally owned shotgun. I make that 57 dead in 7 separate mass killings since 1996.

Looking at the actual records, it makes no more sense to claim our 1996 gun laws and buyback scheme was a failure as it is to hail it as a success. The article Collie linked to is the epitome of beatup reportage, twisting things out of all recognition and misinterpreting stuff sufficiently to make it all but indistinguishable from an outright lie. Arguing the opposite (not that you have actually done that, Jim. Others have, though.) would be equally ridiculous, and for similar reasons.

Took Mrs. Lak's cousin to the range while she was visiting from Blighty, first time she's even touched a gun, let alone fired one. We did the little 5.56 rifle at 100 yards, after a bit of practice she was shooting a three inch circle, that's pretty damn good for a first outing. Didn't do as well with the 9mm pistol, but pistols take a lot more practice than a scoped long gun. She fucking loved it. Now she's looking into a shooting club in the UK while she works on moving over here.

Funny, pretty much Mrs. Lak's entire family is looking at moving over here. Don't they know we're a despicable, racist, backwards society with shitty mustard and watery beer?

700,000 gun owners is rather tiny proportion of "us Brits", of which there are over 64 million. And as one of the gun owners mentions, "when you tell someone you own a gun you're instantly labelled a weirdo".
