UK Police Not shooting people

Post by Feck » Sun Jul 31, 2016 11:06 pm

In England and Wales in the 12 months to March 2016, British police discharged their firearms on just seven occasions, the statistics, released on Thursday show.

This figure is actually a record, of sorts. In the same period ending in March 2013, firearms were used only three times. In the 2015 period they were used six times. Seven uses of weapons is the highest since at least 2009.

On a per-capita basis, Britain’s rate of police gun use would translate into US police using their guns on 35 occasions in an entire year.

Yeah, I saw this. Pretty impressive. Of course, the scared conservatives would claim that they should have fired way more times, so as to prevent all crime including shoplifting and wearing masks in public, etc.

Huh, just one more example of how the US is so much better than the UK. Your cops are so lousy they can't even shoot anyone! WTF kind of cop is that?
Yeah well that's just, like, your opinion, man.

I'm surprised anyone ever bothers to join the police force there. I mean where's the fun in being a cop if you can't shoot anyone???
People think "queue" is just "q" followed by 4 silent letters.

But those letters are not silent.

They're just waiting their turn.

As an ex-policeman from Edinburgh I can assure you not having a firearm was a great positive in relation to the public. I never felt I ever needed one.

It's called the police force for a reason, you know :irate:

We still police by consent here, not by force. This is an important concept for a civilised nation. In fact, Chief police officers are among the most vocal opponents of loose-lipped political calls to paramilitarise the police and we're still happy to call it a police service. Not that a British Bobby won't use a tazer, pepper spray, or the US-style night stick which has replaced the truncheon on you if you give 'em stick. And the old-fashioned 'honest coppering' (a good shoeing) is still deployed here and there - though not so often at the top of the stairs at the cop shop as it used to be: "At this juncture m'lud, the defendant tripped and fell out of his sandals."

Stop, or I'll say stop again!
Worked real well during the London riots.
A rational skeptic should be able to discuss and debate anything, no matter how much they may personally disagree with that point of view. Discussing a subject is not agreeing with it, but understanding it.

You, like so many, mistakenly think the mere existence of a policeman is supposed to magically stop all crimes and misdemeanours.

Policing is a skill which takes time to learn. I disagree with the removal of the beat bobby. Being just a fire brigade in blue is not the way to run things. You dont hear much in a car. Local knowledge is something that seems to be looked down in British forces. The times I have been back to Edinburgh (I tend not to travel in Britain) I never saw a policeman walking. You heard them alright with their American howlers.
