Ian Duncan Smith resigns from UK Government

Post by Exi5tentialist » Fri Mar 18, 2016 9:20 pm

Yippee! He's resigned over cuts to disability benefits. The slimeballs have begun turning on each other!

:cheer:

Well now I like him a little bit...
He said he was stepping down because Osborne’s cuts were for self-imposed political reasons rather than in the national economic interest.

In a resignation letter released on Friday evening, he wrote: “I have for some time and rather reluctantly come to believe that the latest changes to benefits to the disabled, and the context in which they have been made are, a compromise too far.

“While they are defensible in narrow terms, given the continuing deficit, they are not defensible in the way they were placed within a budget that benefits higher earning taxpayers. They should have instead been part of a wider process to engage others in finding the best way to better focus resources on those most in need.

“It is therefore with enormous regret that I have decided to resign.”

Who's he? I could wiki him but beside the post he just resigned from, I doubt that'd tell me what I need to know

I suspect it has more to do with the EU, which he opposes, than any sudden growth of a conscience.

Yeah, I don't believe for a second he's done this as a genuine protest against the cuts to disability payments. He's been directly responsible for fucking the poor and disabled people for years and has done so with glee. If he really wanted to protest this current set of cuts he'd have had plenty of opportunity before they were announced and before the public outcry against them. This is about him wanting to campaign to leave the EU while putting all the blame for all the shit he has done on Osborne so he can get to the top of the party after the referendum.
[Disclaimer - if this is comes across like I think I know what I'm talking about, I want to make it clear that I don't. I'm just trying to get my thoughts down]

Yes, that seems a lot more likely than him suddenly growing a conscience...

I agree. And Universal Credit which he was in charge of has taken absolutely years to get going and will take many years to get right. I think he's jumped before he was pushed.

Nah, he's resigned because he wasn't allowed to cut more from the welfare budget.

More likely he's jumping what he knows to be a sinking ship.

Prolly Rach. I doubt the moral credentials of a man who tried to claim a £60 Savoy breakfast on his expenses.

He is aligning himself with Boris I suspect. Europe was always bound to split the Tories whatever protestations they have made about respecting the opinions of others on the matter. It has always been the case that Europe would break the Tories.

The guardian have just popped a piece up saying that he really resigned because they wouldn't let him cut benefits for pensioners.
