We dont have fighting dogs. They are totally illegal as are all the various cross breeds.

OK, some dogs are bad tempered, and some have bad brains, just like humans - but that's not a function of a particular breed but of many factors, including how they've been bred of course, and how they're raised and handled, and how they're treated. This idea that particular breeds are inherently more dangerous than others is a bit of a myth. Dogs bred and trained for violence and aggression will be easier to train to be violent and aggressive.

Mostly true, but a bad tempered, bred for violence 40 kilo pit bull is more likely to inflict serious injuries or cause deaths than a bad tempered, bred for violence three kilo chihuahua. This is why you rarely see the latter used in the role of junk yard dogs.

I disagree. While it's perfectly possible for an intelligent, conscientious owner to train a fighting breed dog to be safe, that doesn't apply to the average owner.
I agree with the law that fighting breeds should be banned, because not all owners are perfect.
In fact, the people who buy fighting breeds are almost 100% wankers.

If people are bent on training dogs for fighting then banning breeds is pointless. Any dog can be of a "fighting breed" - a poodle (or even a pekinese) can be bred and trained for that. However, as Hermit points out, the consequences for humans of a rampaging pekinese are generally going to be less problematic that of an out-of-control 200lb bull mastif (although a pekinese can still rip your carotid out!), but the quality of ownership and handling are the most important factors here - not how dangerous the public have been led to believe this or that breed is.

We just ban them. They are not allowed to be bred. They have no purpose. Violent breeds will be violent. How many family pet fighting dogs have attacked their owners or their owners children?

I also agree with MM that the people that want them are the semi-intellegent sector of society.
