Footage of Vulcan performing barrel roll investigated

The Civil Aviation Authority has confirmed it is investigating whether the last flying Avro Vulcan broke aviation rules by carrying out a barrel roll during one of its final flights.

The footage purportedly shows the Vulcan performing a roll while flying over Grantham, Lincolnshire, on 4 October.

Seriously though, a little thrill-seeking sentimentality could potentially have permanently grounded the last flying specimen. I can see why they'd be a little upset.

It's not clear from the footage or the accompanying text if either manoeuvre was a normal roll or a barrel roll, or something in between. A normal ("aileron") roll is very safe, even for a large aircraft, with very little g-force. A barrel roll is much more demanding in terms of pilot skill and g-forces. But the Vulcan is (was!) very manoeuvrable for such a large aircraft.

Aileron rolls are for schoolgirls.

For you non-pilot types out there an aileron roll is simply rotating the aircraft along its longitudinal axis with no change in velocity vector - a barrel roll is a 'cork-screwing' maneuver (it looks like a corkscrew if you trace it) with ventral and lateral g-forces.
