Warwick University 'consent workshop' row: What does a rapist look like?
Student George Lawlor hit the headlines when he wrote of his anger at being invited to a university "consent workshop".
"I don't have to be taught to not be a rapist," he wrote of the National Union of Student's I Heart Consent campaign - aimed at combating sexual harassment and assault.
In a parody of the scheme's pledge cards, Mr Lawlor posted a picture of himself holding a sign that said: "This is not what a rapist looks like."
"But that's exactly what a rapist looks like - a normal member of society," said Josie Throup, who runs the consent workshop at the University of Warwick.

Re: Warwick University 'consent workshop' row: What does a r
I've got no problem with that kind of "workshop".
Not everybody is fully prepared for every situation. It's easy to get misled by your mates in how to handle women, and lot's of men are bullshitters and liars, and can give young kids a wrong idea of what works and what doesn't.
Many rapes, I'm sure, start out with no intention of that sort, but a situation gets out of hand. If inexperienced people learn a bit about how the opposite sex thinks, and reacts, and how innocent things can go wrong, it's probably a good thing.

Many "rapes" aren't "rapes" at all, they are manifestations of regret, shame, embarrassment or vindictiveness.mistermack wrote:I've got no problem with that kind of "workshop".

If you don't want to get "raped" then don't put yourself in situations where you can be raped and carry a gun and shoot dead anybody who actually does try to rape you.

Quietly leaving in disgust or rage quitting are not the only options when encountering someone who offends your sensitivies in a forum whose other members you enjoy interacting with. Here's the news: You don't have to read his/her posts, the bits of it other members quote or bits where other people discuss whatever the person you object to has brought up.

Re: Warwick University 'consent workshop' row: What does a r
Indeed. And that's what's so great about THIS kind of public forum. You don't even have to tolerate some street preacher haranguing you from a soapbox on the corner at Hyde Park, you don't even have to see something that offends thine eye, and all without having to pluck out your eye. You just have to use your index finger to bypass anything that might disturb your Wa.Hermit wrote:(Referring to Mistermack's post)

Of course, Ian's disgust and rage are entirely faux in nature. He's just pissed because I'm right and he's wrong and he knows it and he is unable to formulate a persuasive rebuttal argument because he knows he's simply wrong but refuses to admit it...but he also is incapable of controlling his own index finger and is compelled to read my posts even though he knows it's going to piss him off.

This is why I don't scroll straight past every one of your posts. I actually find absurdity quite entertaining. And yes, your absurdity, for instance. Ian's posts ar not absurd. They are pathetically and relentlessly boring since he rejoined. I don't know how he doesn't fall asleep himself when he writes them.Seth wrote:He's just pissed because I'm right and he's wrong and he knows it and he is unable to formulate a persuasive rebuttal argument because he knows he's simply wrong but refuses to admit it...

Good grief - for once I am agreeing with Seth. The issue of rape has been hijacked by feminists to bash men with. Rape is bad, very bad, but insisting that almost everything is rape short of the woman unzipping you, taking your dick out and inserting it is rape, is downright ridiculous - and seems to be where some of them are taking the issue.

Re: Warwick University 'consent workshop' row: What does a r
I see no harm in exploring the ins and outs of situations in a workshop. I would happily attend one, if I was at the age when I could pull some young talent. There might be some horny young women getting a bit slippery with all that sex talk.
But anyway, if it gave a bit of insight to both sexes, about how situations get out of control, it might save someone from a rape charge, or some woman getting raped.
That's different to using the same criteria in a court of law, after it has all gone wrong.
That needs to be a lot more rigorous and less politically correct.
But a workshop isn't a crown court.

Re: Warwick University 'consent workshop' row: What does a r
Exactly - and I agree with you to an extent. The 'all men are potential rapists' agenda will sadly almost certainly be on display at such a workshop though. Impossible to have a rational, neutral and dispassionate discussion about the issues in that environment I would suggest - as the climate exists currently anyway.
There was a woman on Radio4 here yesterday talking about men initiating sex with a sleeping partner (as in 'asleep[' having had sex before) as rape. In the same sentence she described rape as the next worst thing to murder. Whilst I agree there is potential for initiating sex with a partner who is asleep as wrong headed, there is also the potential for a very nice experience for both of you. Rape is one of those issues, (and I will repeat that it is a very very bad thing) that has the potential in the wrong hands to hijack everything else.

By the same logic, if you don't want to be accused of rape, don't put yourself in a situation where you might be accused of having sex without consent.Seth wrote:Many "rapes" aren't "rapes" at all, they are manifestations of regret, shame, embarrassment or vindictiveness.mistermack wrote:I've got no problem with that kind of "workshop".

Re: Warwick University 'consent workshop' row: What does a r
I think the biggest lie that they push, is that "all rape is rape" and that there's no such thing as a minor rape, and that "no means no".
Whereas most of us know that no doesn't necessarily mean no, that there is such a thing as minor cases of rape, and that all rape is not necessarily rape. ( as in a willing girl who instigates sex a day before her sixteenth birthday, without telling her "rapist" who is a day over sixteen ).
If people could get it into their thick heads that every incident is individual, and that some are horrendous, while others can be ignored, they might start getting it right. But once the word "rape" is attached to anything, it seems to take on a life of it's own.

Re: Warwick University 'consent workshop' row: What does a r
Haha. Where to start. Anecdotes perhaps? I am a rapist. One morning my partner and I woke up pretty much at the same time. We were already fucking. On another I brought this honey bee home from a party, and as she said "No, I'm not that sort of a girl, she took her pullover, shirt and bra off over her head in one gracefully sweeping motion.
Confessions aside, George Lawlor's statement "This is not what a rapist looks like" is about as idiotic as one can get. Phrenology was thrown out of the window over a century ago. In 70 or 80% cases of proven rapes the rapist was personally known by the victim. London to a brick, the offenders are not distinguishable from non-offenders by their appearance.
