The Oklahoma University branch of the Sigma Alpha Epsilon fraternity has been closed and all of its members disbarred and asked to leave the frat-house, after racist chanting was videoed and went viral. Good!

It does appear to be a tradition that lends itself to cunts, bullies and the supposedly "entitled". Nothing I would have wanted anything to do with had it existed in the UK when i was at uni.

Thing is I do think we used to have brotherhoods and societies not quite unlike US frats... just those things went out of fashion, like, before WWII

There were plenty of Greek houses at my university, some academic but mostly social ones. Something like 50 fraternities snd 40 sororities. Fortunately, my college was big enough (50,000+ students) that the Greek community didn't dominate campus social life.

My friend and I were asked to join one, Lambda Chi Alpha, after we wound up at a couple of their parties thanks to a mutual acquaintance. My friend joined, but I didn't. They seemed like a bunch of douchebags to me.

50,000? That's a lot of students. We only have about 15,000 - 18,000, depending on how you count them - as I was explaining today, for what seems like the umpteenth time.

Anyway, we have plenty of clubs and societies, but they are mostly quite specific in terms of what they're about.
