'Sweatshop' claims over Fawcett Society slogan T-shirt

Image

The charity behind a pro-feminism T-shirt worn by leading politicians has vowed to investigate claims that the item was made in sweatshop conditions.

Equality campaigning group the Fawcett Society said it was "disappointed" to learn of the allegations.

The Mail on Sunday reported the £45 "This is what a feminist looks like" shirt is made by women paid 62p an hour on the island of Mauritius.

The Fawcett Society said it was told the garment would be made ethically.

The T-shirt has been worn by Deputy Prime Minister Nick Clegg and Labour leader Ed Miliband in promotional pictures - but Prime Minister David Cameron reportedly declined to be photographed in it.

Deputy Labour leader Harriet Harman then wore it in the House of Commons during Prime Minister's Questions.

Difficult question though. Mauritius is relatively prosperous, and this wage is 10-20 times the amount earned in some continental African countries.

Would these workers gain anything from a boycott of these shirts?

No, they should have a fair wage in comparison with local workers, maybe 25% less to cover free lodgings, as then they'd have a social life of sorts rather than being kept in pens for four years away from family, away from a chance to live a life. Would you prefer that for those in African countries? suggesting a African Supermax solution? :nono:

Pay £45 for a sweatshirt that cost about a pound to make?

And they want to run the country? What a fuckin joke.

And they wonder why their personal ratings are nearly down to single figures.
While there is a market for shit, there will be assholes to supply it.

Transportation adds to cost. Need special security guards in case the workers slaves try to do a runner being transported.

I've never understood the principle of castigating people who pay low wages in the third world.
The way to get wages up is to have lots of successful businesses competing for the labour. Not slagging off the people who are trying to make a buck.

What would make a difference though, is for governments to make sure that the poor get paid what they are promised. There are a lot of people out there who rip off the poor. They should be put behind bars when caught for a long time. That sort of deterrent might well make a difference to the poor.

No probs.
Would you prefer that for those in African countries?
Yup. In an ideal world everybody would be earning a living wage and everybody that wanted a job would be employed.

Not really.
