Piracy police arrest Nottingham man, 20

A man who allegedly ran a service that provided roundabout access to pirated films and music files has been arrested by City of London Police.

The 20-year-old from Nottingham is believed to have been running a proxy server that connected to addresses banned by service providers in the UK.

Several popular proxy sites have been taken down in the past few days, but no connection has been made to the arrest.

The police have placed warning notices on the sites concerned.

The operation was carried out by the Intellectual Property Crime Unit (Pipcu), and supported by the UK's Federation Against Copyright Theft (Fact).

Pipcu announced last week it had started placing banner advertisements on websites believed to be offering pirated content illegally.

The messages, which appear instead of paid-for ads, ask users to close their web browsers.

The film and music industries have consistently pushed for court orders to ban access to piracy sites in the UK, and many popular torrent sites are now blocked by the major UK internet service providers (ISPs).

:thinks:

Apparently, he provided access to a lot of films that were Arr-rated.

Made sense ten years ago but now with plenty of cheap legal sources for online movies it must be the idiot fringe keeping it going.

Cheap is not free.

Plenty of people (in fact most) will never pay anything for something they can steal for free without any chance of getting caught. Human beings are as dishonest as they can get away with , it takes the enforcement of human laws or the fear of hell to get them to behave

Yes, zero tolerance. My thinking exactly. Stop the small guys with hell and damnation, and the big guys will think twice also. :read:

Did they keel-haul the rusty scupper :ask:
People think "queue" is just "q" followed by 4 silent letters.

But those letters are not silent.

They're just waiting their turn.

The key phrase here is "ran a service". Had he just been downloading videos or music for his own use, he would never have been targeted. But the wording used implies that he was making money out of his piracy (one would assume pieces-of-eight or similar) and so the media companies decided to make an example of him. Obviously, Simon Cowell and his ilk are the only ones that should be allowed to make huge, bloated profits out of the artistic endeavours of others. :tea:

Wait ... Cowell works with people who have artistic talent? Who'd thunk it?

The sites taken down by City of London Police do not offer pirated content themselves, but rather offer tools that allow users to connect to illegal services such as the Pirate Bay and similar torrent sites.
:nono:

These laws are getting so far out of hand in their attempt to fight technology rather than embrace it. And this isn't even just about copyrights, - the website of the guy they've arrested (see it here on internet archive) is a simple and free proxy service to get around government censorship of other websites. The continued attempts from both corporations and government to retain control over all information in the face of the internet is disgusting.
[Disclaimer - if this is comes across like I think I know what I'm talking about, I want to make it clear that I don't. I'm just trying to get my thoughts down]
