For anyone who doesn't know the story, 25 years ago, about 90 Liverpool football fans were killed in a crush, at Hillsborough, the stadium of Sheffield Wednesday football club.

To shorten the story, many Liverpool fans arrived late, lots of them without tickets, and the match was about to start. They were all keen not to miss any of the match.

There developed a pushing and shoving crowd around the turnstiles, who were behaving so badly, that people without tickets were unable to go back out, when they were refused entry, due to the crush, so nobody was getting through. It got so bad, that the top policeman ordered that the main exit gate should be opened, to release the crush, because he thought that people were going to be killed.

Then, the whole crowd poured in, unrestricted, filled the tunnel leading to the stands, shoving everybody in the stands forward, until they were stopped by the front fence. Then there was a mega-crush, and about ninety people died.

So basically, ninety Liverpool fans were crushed to death, by the combined pushing of the other Liverpool fans trying to get in.

What I don't get, is how the entire media and two inquiries have conspired to absolve the fans of any blame for this. When it's an inescapable fact that if they had behaved properly, not a single person would have died.
You never hear that point made in the media. Everybody knows it, but nobody says it.
Even two lengthy inquiries went out of their way to say that Liverpool fans weren't to blame.

The police made mistakes, of course they did. But they didn't have the advantage of perfect hindsight that today's ''experts'' have.

The story isn't that a disaster happened. It's the amazing behaviour of the British media, in not pointing out the bleedin obvious, and that is that the dead were killed by their fellow fans.

If you read the British press, or the inquiry reports, it's like the Liverpool fans behaved like angels, and nothing could have prevented a tragedy, caused by poor policing.

They somehow ignore the fact that matches were held at Hillsborough week in, week out, year in, year out, and nobody died. Then Liverpool turn up, and ninety odd are killed.

And Liverpool fans already had form. They had previously killed 39 fans at Heysel Stadium, mostly Juventus fans. Not their fault either I suppose. Blame the bricks in the wall.

Exactly. A few dozen police can't control several thousand fans, unless they behave like they should, and respond to directions. If they choose to ignore the police, and behave like animals pushing to get to the trough, there's nothing the police can do.

I'm no lover or defender of the police, but I don't like to see the truth ignored like it is, by the entire press.
If they can bend the truth so blatantly in this case, it makes me wonder what other crap we are being fed.
