Suspended from School Over Facebook Post

Post by Coito ergo sum » Wed May 18, 2011 11:13 pm

CONCORD, N.H. -- The mother of a Concord middle school student is decrying the school district after her daughter was suspended due to a Facebook post.
Kimberly Dell'isola said her daughter was suspended for five days after saying she wished Osama bin Laden killed her math teacher.
While she agrees the post was offensive, Dell'isola said her daughter's free speech should be protected.
"In hindsight, she's mortified that she said that, but she's a 13-year-old kid," Dell'isola said.

A suspension will do her good. Give her time to think about her stupidity.

She's a kid. Stupidity is what children do.

Declaring in public - to a potentially very wide audience in fact - that you'd like your teacher dead. The Internet allows children (and adults) to be stupid on a massive scale.

No surprise at the punishment really.

5 days off school? That'll encourage the copycats.

I always considered suspension the reward for my behavior. Fools.

As long as they actually make them do homework while they are suspended, then it shouldn't be seen as a holiday by the student.

I didn't even get a detention when I told the dean of my high school to go fuck himself then flipped him off as I walked away.
I'm wild just like a rock, a stone, a tree
And I'm free, just like the wind the breeze that blows
And I flow, just like a brook, a stream, the rain
And I fly, just like a bird up in the sky
And I'll surely die, just like a flower plucked
And dragged away and thrown away
And then one day it turns to clay
It blows away, it finds a ray, it finds its way
And there it lays until the rain and sun
Then I breathe, just like the wind the breeze that blows
And I grow, just like a baby breastfeeding
And it's beautiful, that's life

For me being suspended for five days would have been humiliating...sure, I might have been slapped on the back for it by my stoner friends, but as a geek and a good student I would definitely have been embarrassed about it in front of my geeky friends.

In the real world, as an adult, threatening to kill someone or wishing them dead is a crime...she deserved the punishment. The teacher may have felt threatened by it. It's not just a private matter for the parents to deal with when it's made public on Facebook and involves a teacher.

Ayep. One of the responsibilities of adults is to teach children that there are repercussions and consequences to behaviour, and that things we do affect others, so we should be mindful of what we say and how we act.
