Local elections, though you'd hardly know it..

Post by Rum » Thu May 05, 2011 2:27 pm

Has anyone voted here? I had planned to, but when Kath's parents were here after her dad broke his ankle last week her mom, whist tidying up (in lieu of rent!) managed to let our voting cards slip behind the mantle piece - a black hole from which nothing emerges!

I was going to vote for Labour locally (though they won't need me as they will wipe the floor) and for AV.

There's not much in the media though. Everyone just seems fed up, tired and cynical..

New Zealand looks very attractive..

“I wish no harm to any human being, but I, as one man, am going to exercise my freedom of speech. No human being on the face of the earth, no government is going to take from me my right to speak, my right to protest against wrong, my right to do everything that is for the benefit of mankind. I am not here, then, as the accused; I am here as the accuser of capitalism dripping with blood from head to foot.”

John Maclean (Scottish socialist) speech from the Dock 1918.

The paparazzi were out in force at ours today, presumably because Alec Salmond (Scottish first minister) is "our" MSP - my guess is he was going to vote at the same polling station.

I put some Xs in things...

The Pope was today knocked down at the start of Christmas mass by a woman who hopped over the barriers. The woman was said to be, "Mentally unstable."

Which is probably why she went unnoticed among a crowd of Christians.

Too late for NZ. Have to be under 55.

I'm voting this evening - Greens, Alliance and an independent. Voting Yes to AV.

Token gesture to reduce their majority. This is Wigan - been solidly Labour since the middle ages.

I didn't vote because I didn't understand any of it. This AV? WTF? I still don't understand first past the post and now their upgrading to this confusion. Also you get the same pricks in those offices no matter what. Wasn't Hitler elected?

I'm surprised - and such an intelligent chap! Its easy

Current System (First past the post)

Two parties

Party A - 70%
Party B 30%

Party A wins

Three parties (or more)

Party A 40%
Party B 30%
Party C 30%

Party A wins and forms a government which is not voted in my the majority of the population. A common outcome in the UK.

AV

Second (and more) choices are counted and you end up with more likelihood of more people voting overall for who ends up in power.
