Well, I had to live there almost half a year, actually working on getting a citizen out of jail. It was obviously tough from what the guy said, but not even remotely as the article describes. And during that time I participated in the craziest swinger parties I have ever seen...

I don't understand why anyone goes to these places for fun. The Gulf states basically suck Bahrain isn't too bad if you're an expat, because there are several thousand U.S. marines on the island the the Sheik knows which side of the bread has the butter on it, but you can keep the rest of them. I spent several years in Bahrain but it was for money, not for fun.

The Bahrani cops were pretty cool for minor offenses. Two of my guys got arrested for drunk driving and spent the night in jail, but got to order Kentucky Fried Chicken and played cards with the guards till lights out. Paid a nominal fine in the morning and came home. But one guy got popped for having marijuana mailed to him, he disappeared for two weeks till I managed to track him down in prison. Eventually they deported him. Pretty grim, but he was never beaten or otherwise abused. They were a LOT worse on the locals. I was talking to the detective who was handling the case and they brought in a Bahraini kid who'd been caught with some hash. The detective, who fancied himself someone out of Starsky and Hutch with his Levis and sunglasses, excused himself, grabbed the kid and beat him unconscious with a rubber truncheon. I just sat there. They dragged the kid off to the cells and he sat down, wiped his face and was suddenly all friendly and helpful again. Fucking bizarre.

Yes, true. What happened in the article is awful, but ,really...getting arrested for swearing or for growing a plant, ones no worse than the other. Both ridiculous. As for being beaten by cops, happens in the west a lot too.

No, and I'm not trying to defend how regressive and stupid their laws (and law enforcement officers) are. You just can't call them 'savages'. There exists no primitive, no 'savage' culture in the world; there's just different cultures, and variation between them.
