The UK and Dutch governments are preparing court action against Iceland to recover 4bn euros (£3.5bn) lost when the country's bank system collapsed.

The banks went broke and the Icelanders simply took the view that Banks can fail. and when they do that is a matter for investors and depositers to sort out. and if the pot is short - then tough titty.

Gordon Brown loved writing cheques that would never be cashed on his watch - why the f#ck he gave our money away is a question for him.......and why he thought the icelanders would re-imburse his / our stupidity. (of course the real reason for the bailout by the UK was because our own banking system was melting down and (more importantly) freinds and family of the great and the good had money with the Icelandic Banks).

No-one can guarantee 100% an investment. However, assurances were made at governmental level for Landsbanki to be allowed to sell their products to British and Dutch investors. Naive perhaps, but that's the way these things go. The icelandic people should not be made to pay, in my humble opinion. However, the Icelandic economy will probably suffer due to reduced credit ratings and be blocked from joining the EU.
