Worst school EVER? I guess it serves him right going to that fundamentalist training camp.
Our struggle is not against actual corrupt individuals, but against those in power in general, against their authority, against the global order and the ideological mystification which sustains it.

Well you have to admire that fact that in this instance they are NOT being Christian hypocrites.
When I say "admire"... well you know what I mean.

What's wrong with that? He agreed to abide by their honor code, and that's part of it. It is Brigham Young University after all.sandinista wrote:Worst school EVER? I give the university some credit for their willingness to give up a basketball star rather than compromise their code...on the other hand, there are universities who would look the other way if they could when their sports stars engage in rape.

That's a completely different point and nothing to do with the OPsandinista wrote:Whats wrong is the entire premise. Religious "educational" institutes. Valid point. On the other hand, Utah juries seem unreasonably willing to accept the "she asked for it" defense.maiforpeace wrote:I give the university some credit for their willingness to give up a basketball star rather than compromise their code...on the other hand, there are universities who would look the other way if they could when their sports stars engage in rape.

Re: Student basketball star suspended for pre-marital sex
As far as religious universities go...not all of them are terrible. I have an acquaintance who attends a Lutheran University down south, and he is also the president of the Secular Student Alliance at that same university. With the exception of some classes in theology which are all elective, a student can get a fully secular education there and are allowed to believe (or not believe) what they want.
The universities I am more concerned about, which I expect you will be too, are the for profit universities.

Yeah, right - I mean, they'd find it just great if he had half a dozen thirteen year old wives...pawiz wrote:Well you have to admire that fact that in this instance they are NOT being Christian hypocrites.

For me in this case it's more specifically the imposition of religiously framed values into the private life of an individual.sandinista wrote:Whats wrong is the entire premise. Realistically, Mai, who do you think signs a basketball star up to an honour code? I think it would be naive to believe he was allowed to be completely responsible for the decision.
