I hope it never gets so bad that I have to eat bugs. :?

The trick is to swallow them whole followed by lots of water so they drown in your stomach. The sensation is "interesting".

Eat the right bugs. Some are bad for you and others nutritious. Most larvae are OK. If you fry them they are more paltable and you reduce the risk of throwing up.

But you loose a lot of nutrients. Besides, if you're eating bugs you probably don't have a skillet with you.

In a panic setting I'd be resourceful in a different way to having the time.

This is not making them sound any more palatable.

I can start a fire, and I could use a flat rock. We are talking about be resourceful with what the environment provides us.

I started a fire one time, during survival training. They sent a water bomber.

That's a great way to get rescued. Public agencies pay way more attention to fires than they do lost hikers. I saw an episode of "I shouldn't be alive" about a couple who went hiking in the Sierra Nevada and got trapped in a canyon they couldn't escape from (not sure why they couldn't climb back out the way they came, but anyway...) because the downstream end was a cliff and waterfall, as was the upstream end.

They actually found a dead body of a hiker who had gone missing a year or two earlier who had done the same thing, but had broken his leg. They were utterly unprepared, without any camping supplies, and only the matches in the dead guy's tent allowed them to start a forest fire that eventually attracted a rescue helicopter.

Screw the trees, they will grow back, GET ME OUT!

So, you are either admitting incompetence or that you are an arsonist.

I got myself into a similar situation once climbing rocks. See, I was able to drop down the rock--gravity helping--but it was quite the struggle to climb back up--gravity interfering--with nothing to take hold of. I had stupidly gone off on my own and with no day pack of supplies.

Obviously I did get myself out. But it was scary.
Lesson learned.

No, just that the water-bomber controllers are paranoid nitwits.

I've eaten these, mopane worms, they're common in Southern Africa. Actually the caterpillar of the Gonimbrasia belina moth. They're not bad grilled.

I've eaten fried termites and fried grasshoppers. I drew the line at fried roaches.
Yeah well that's just, like, your opinion, man.

Apparently you can't eat rats - so say the SAS - because they carry germs. They are also immune to rat poison and will devour anything.
