Born in August, 1896.
These folks tend to revise my perspective of what constitutes a "long time ago."
Born in 1896, she would have been turning 18 years old when the guns of August began firing in 1914, and World War 1 began.
When she was a young girl and a teenager, there was still an "Ottoman Empire." Russia was still ruled by Czars.
The Spanish American War was as recent history to her in school as the War in Iraq is to us.
She probably never saw an automobile until she was in her 20s.
She probably grew up thinking not having running water, electricity or a telephone was normal, and that these things were new luxuries.
The Write Bros. first flew when she was 17 years old. She might have read a current newspaper article in her town about the invention.
She was 5 years old when Queen Victoria died.
Takes these events that to us seem so ancient, and makes them seem not quite so long ago - or at least reminds us that a century is not much time at all, in the grand scheme of things.

There's a new oldest person somewhere? They might not be older but they'll still be old enough to be worth mentioning, surely?

The previous oldest person is dead and the set of dead people is fairly extensive these days. Surely the title should be Newest Worlds Oldest Person Identified?Coito ergo sum wrote:The supposed oldest living person is mentioned in the article.Crumple wrote:There's a new oldest person somewhere? I think the thing people are most interested in about the world's oldest people is how old they are at death. Unfortunately we have to wait until they die to know that.
I'm rooting for Walter Breunig to make it to the top, because it's so rare for a man to do so.

I suppose you'd need to take that up with the author of the article, or write your own article about the new oldest person. The article I posted was about the former oldest person.Crumple wrote:The previous oldest person is dead and the set of dead people is fairly extensive these days.
