A scary statistic but what is more scary is that this figure has remained static over several decades. What can be done to prevent things declining when half the workforce have IQ's below a hundred and a substantial number below 90?

I thought the "100 average" was outdated. Isn't it something like 108 nowadays? I could be wrong about this, but I think people in general are smarter than they were several generations ago, when IQ tests were first invented.

My wife and I have sworn, with handshake and everything, that if Sarah Palin is ever elected President then we're moving either to the UK or Australia (we want an English-speaking country, and Canada is just too cold for us - sorry, forum Canucks). And we're both fairly bright people, above whatever the average is anyway. So if we are determined to leave under such circumstances, then there are probably others as well. There will be a "brain drain" like that experienced in other countries - which seems appropriate, given what will prompt it.

The "Flynn effect" was that the average score tended to increase on the same tests as time passed. It was never clear whether this was an actual increase in intelligence or just the tests making it into popular culture. I believe there's also some evidence that the effect has reversed in recent decades, anyway.

Either way, I believe current tests are still normalized to a 100 average across the entire population.

What can be done? Let the 'south' secede. That will lift the US average IQ immensely.

If Sarah Palin gets in the White House, do you really think that moving out of America will save you? Once she starts throwing nukes around, her abysmal geography will mean that any country is as likely to be flattened as any other - except Holland, which is already flat.
