How easy would it be to shut down the internet..

Post by Rum » Sat Jan 29, 2011 6:01 pm

..in the 'developed' world.

Given the apparent ease with which they shut down a large part of Egypt's internet infrastructure it occurred to me that any 'well prepared' government would have contingency plans to shut it down in the event of massive social disorder. Given also that it was originally designed so that signals could take multiple routes to their destination in case of military strikes on particular bits of the infrastructure, there seems to be a bit of a contradiction.

So I wonder how easy or hard would it be to shut down the net in say the UK or the USA?

Just fill it with porn, then it would take forever to find anything without bookmarks.

Here in the US they introduced a Cybersecurity Act in 2009 that might have granted the president some powers including a limited "kill" switch, but so far it hasn't passed. Looks like it has been reintroduced, so it's definitely worth keeping an eye on.

Thanks for the update. I'm glad it didn't pass, and I certainly hope it doesn't now.

yep, that's about it.
Our struggle is not against actual corrupt individuals, but against those in power in general, against their authority, against the global order and the ideological mystification which sustains it.

Or, they could just flood the tubes with traffic like what the American government did to the Wikileaks sites by DDoSing it.

It seems it was quite simple, according to an item on the BBC radio news this morning. Some heavy duty guy in the government had a list of ISPs and phoned them one by one telling them to turn their equipment off 'or else'. Took less than an hour.

Seems to me that this ability in an extremely unhealthy one..in the wrong hands - depending on one's position of course.

They've done that. In fact, they've been doing it since the 90s at least.
