Is round-the-clock coverage of the Chile miners rescue ...

Post by klr » Tue Oct 12, 2010 11:40 pm

... a bit too much? Sky News (who else) even has a "Miners rescued" graphic - currently 0 of 33, since the actual rescuing has yet to actually start.

This is not some sort of reality TV show, yet Sky News (and others) seem to treat it as if it is. Not that I should be surprised given the way some news channels behave. Sex up the news whatever way possible. If there's nothing important happening, pick something and make it seem important somehow. If there's a human interest story - take your pick - just milk it for all it's worth, and then some.

When they get out, some of them will probably wish they were safely back underground, and not just because they have multiple women squaring off over them. Half the world's media seem to be camped out at the rescue site at the moment. :what:

After hearing the ridiculously OTT excitement the departure of the now apparently venerated Image DRILL Image engendered yesterday I left the car radio off today.

I'm sure they must have agreed between them before they were rescued - "what happend under ground, stays underground!"

I'm not surprised that Sky has a "Rescue-o-meter". All news looks like The Day Today now.

I heard some silly twat of a DJ on the radio today comparing it with Dunkirk. It's great that they're being rescued, but ffs... And I bet they'll all thank god, not Mr.-Big-Fuck-Off-Black-And-Decker inventor.

This sort of thing really does bug the shit out of me. It's an example of the "TV is the opium of the masses idea". But worse, there are important and significant things happening in the world every day, yet news editors anestetise us with this soap opera crap (it's as bad as them filling our news with stories about nobodies from reality tv). I know their argument would be that they show news that people want to watch, and this is no doubt partly true. But they also control the minds of the masses and persuade them they actually want this pointless shite.

It's certainly cheaper than having numerous correspondents in every country in the world, ready to cover any story of great importance. :|

Apparently they have agreed to keep quiet about what happened down there and especially the first days when they all thought they would die down there... I suspect there was a bit more than just wanking going on :shifty:

Yeah, the first thing I'd think about if I was going to die in the dark would be bumming a dusty, sweaty guy!

I think not.

And I'm bi.

Er, seriously?
