Pirate Bay Founders Jailed.
BBC News Story
A rather expected result. No details on the ruling yet, which I'd be interested to read.

Re: Pirate Bay Founders Jailed.
Yes, no surprise really.

TBH, I don't know how long they expected to be able to continue operating. Shit, why make product at all if no-one pays for it?A court in Sweden has handed down its verdict on four men behind The Pirate Bay (TPB), the world's biggest file-sharing website.
Frederik Neij, Gottfrid Svartholm Warg, Carl Lundstrom and Peter Sunde were found guilty of breaking copyright law and were sentenced to a year in jail.
In a Twitter posting, Mr Sunde said: "Nothing will happen to TPB, this is just theatre for the media."
Mr Sunde went on to say that he "got the news last night that we lost".
"It used to be only movies, now even verdicts are out before the official release."
The Pirate Bay is the world's most high profile file-sharing website and was set up in 2003 by anti-copyright organisation Piratbyran, but for the last five years it has been run by individuals.
Millions of files are exchanged using the service every day.
No copyright content is hosted on The Pirate Bay's web servers; instead the site hosts "torrent" links to TV, film and music files held on its users' computers.
Critics of the trial say Swedish authorities only brought the case because of pressure from the US film industry.

Re: Pirate Bay Founders Jailed.
True Enough.
I may (or not) have downloaded a few things in the past but these are my caveats:
a) It's something that isn't out in the UK, but I intend to purchase when it is.
b) It is a TV series that is not shown at all in the UK.
and finally:
c) It is a TV series (usually american) that is 6 months in front on the UK, but is shown on a channel I subscribe to.
I, recently, have been using BBCi Player instead of another torrent site I know for things like QI or Horizon. This, anecdotally, shows that at least I would use a service to download CURRENT programming, if it was legal.
(I don't download music at all, from non-legal sources.)

That's a little worrying. They weren't actually providing any pirated files, yet they apparently broke copyright law anyway. No copyright content is hosted on The Pirate Bay's web servers; instead the site hosts "torrent" links....

They "facilitated" others to break copyright law. The charge of copyright theft, themselves, was dropped early on in the case.Pappa wrote:That's a little worrying. That's awful. It reminds me of the new laws here making the possession of anything "which could be useful to a terrorist" illegal. That's anything at all.AshtonBlack wrote:They "facilitated" others to break copyright law. I was just about to post this. I don't really know what to say about it as I haven't been following it very closely. Bit of a shocker really!
Indeed. The world is going crazier and crazier.. I heard on the news today that apparently local councils have been using the anti-terror laws to spy on people and fine them (I think) for putting their bins out on the wrong dayThat's awful. It reminds me of the new laws here making the possession of anything "which could be useful to a terrorist" illegal. That's anything at all.

Hmmm, I agree with you. I don't think the law needs extending in this way.Pappa wrote:That's awful. For example: I have a 3.5" bladed folding knife in a toolbox in the shed. For this I cannot be arrested.
However, if I carry said knife in my pocket on a Sat night I would be arrested quite quickly.
Context. What this law does, is remove the need for the police to prove intention and/or context.

Re: Pirate Bay Founders Jailed.

In the Netherlands a trial was ruled in favor of the person accused of facilitating by hosting Torrents. Stichting Brein (the Dutch RIAA) had to drop the charges. They did win a few court cases where actual copyrighted material was found.

hmmmm, start off by labeling themselves "pirates". Then the law shows up. Strange sequence of events, that.

I carry crowbars, axes, saws and even some lock picks in my truck; they could be labeled break-in tools. During working hours it's OK, but if I take the truck out at night I could technically be charged. Especially about the lock picks, I'm not a registered locksmith any more.

Some other pirating site will just replace them. They were obviously somewhat smart guys, they knew jail time was a possibility.
We danced.
Re: Pirate Bay Founders Jailed.
People will get the files whether pirate bay is up or not - the only way that any sort of anti-piracy laws would be valid is if they can demonstrate that there's any crippling or even noticably damaging impact on the industry.
There isn't. No matter how many billions of dollars have been lost, I've never heard of an organisation going out of business as a result of individuals downloading rather than buying their material.
