Speedy recovery Hitch!!Christopher Hitchens is being treated for cancer, forcing the D.C. writer to cut short his latest book tour. In a statement released through his publisher Twelve, the British-born provocateur, 61, said that he has "been advised by my physician that I must undergo a course of chemotherapy on my esophagus. This advice seems persuasive to me." The notorious chainsmoker announced in 2008 he had given up tobacco -- driven, he said, by "fear." (His wife Carol Blue told us then he "wants to live -- live to see his political enemies defeated.") But he was still sneaking a smoke or two when our colleague Manuel Roig-Franzia interviewed him last month.

Re: Christopher Hitchens diagnosed with cancer
My friend has Oesophageal cancer - it ain't nice! I hope they caught it early in CH's case. It is ominous that they only mentioned a course of chemo - the best treatment is a short bout of chemo then an operation - but if it is not caught very early, it is inoperable and it is a case of hit and hope with repeated chemo and possible radio if it spreads - the prognosis then is not good long-term.

A book is a version of the world. If you do not like it, ignore it; or offer your own version in return.

"Own smugness"? The faithtard's abilities to project really knows no bounds does it?Too bad he has no faith in the Lord, as it can be quite comforting in times like this. I guess he can lay in his deathbed wrapped in his own smugness while those of us with faith can pray for his soul - despite his many years of making fun of us.

That fucking SUCKS.
My mother had cancer of the esophagus.
Most people think it's tobacco that causes it, but it's also caused by alcoholism. The two combined can be deadly. It was for my mother.

Re: Christopher Hitchens diagnosed with cancer
Oesophageal cancer- increased risk in Males, Smokers, Spirit drinkers, Spicy food eaters - so Hitchens nails 3 of those at least. Sad. It is a pig of a disease.

Bad news!
He was definitely in the high risk group, but he knowingly took those risks.
Hopefully they got it early.
