LISBON, Portugal – Pope Benedict XVI on Tuesday blamed the church's own sins for the clerical abuse scandal — not a campaign mounted by outsiders — and called for profound purification to end what he called the "greatest persecution" the church has endured.
His strong comments placed responsibility for the crisis squarely on the sins of pedophile priests, repudiating the Vatican's initial response to the scandal in which it blamed the media as well as pro-choice and pro-gay marriage advocates for mounting what it called a campaign against the church and the pope.
Speaking en route to Portugal, Benedict said the Catholic church had always suffered from problems of its own making but that "today we see it in a truly terrifying way."
"The greatest persecution of the church doesn't come from enemies on the outside but is born from the sins within the church," the pontiff said. "The church needs to profoundly relearn penitence, accept purification, learn forgiveness but also justice."
Now, I'm not Catholic, but isn't this just the first step toward forgiveness? Admission of guilt, right? But, that's not all of it.
According the Catechism, "Penance requires . . . the sinner to endure all things willingly, be contrite of heart, confess with the lips, and practice complete humility and fruitful satisfaction." * * *
"Many sins wrong our neighbor. One must do what is possible in order to repair the harm (e.g., return stolen goods, restore the reputation of someone slandered, pay compensation for injuries). Simple justice requires as much. But sin also injures and weakens the sinner himself, as well as his relationships with God and neighbor. Absolution takes away sin, but it does not remedy all the disorders sin has caused.62 Raised up from sin, the sinner must still recover his full spiritual health by doing something more to make amends for the sin: he must "make satisfaction for" or "expiate" his sins. This satisfaction is also called "penance."
So, it's not enough that these pederast monsters pay, through the church, money damages in compensation, but they need to do something more to make amends for the sins. Shouldn't the Pope be announcing what the church will do as part of this penance?
The Catechism goes on, "The penance the confessor imposes must take into account the penitent's personal situation and must seek his spiritual good. It must correspond as far as possible with the gravity and nature of the sins committed. It can consist of prayer, an offering, works of mercy, service of neighbor, voluntary self-denial, sacrifices, and above all the patient acceptance of the cross we must bear."
So, what more will the church be doing to serve the world, and engage in works of mercy? It can't be just what the church has been doing all along. These monster rapist priests must go out there in full admission of what they did, pray for forgiveness, pay damages to make up for the injury to the fullest extent, and personally do works of mercy, offerings of service, make sacrifices and all that sort of thing.
They can't sweep this shit under the rug and be true to their word, and follow the same rules they impose on confessing sinners.
What I think complies with the Catechism on confessions would be:
1. Complete admission by pedophile priests of their crimes;
2. Guilty pleas by all who did the deeds;
3. Payment of millions of dollars in damages for each victim
4. Payment of millions of dollars in damages for each victim's family members
5. Voluntary service by the church, by all the pedophiles, and by all those involved in covering up the crimes to do good deeds all over the worlds for the rest of their natural born lives to begin to make up for the lives they've wrecked.
That would be a good start.
