Iceland bans all strip clubs. All of them.

Post by Coito ergo sum » Sat Apr 17, 2010 1:40 pm

Iceland has not only banned strip clubs, but they have banned any business that makes a profit related to the "nudity" of its employees.

This is part of an alarming trend in the West. We seem to, under the rubric of progressive and liberal politics, be eliminating individual freedoms.

This is a grave violation of civil rights, in my opinion. What a woman chooses to do with her body is her business. If she wants to dance, she can dance. If she wants to accept money from someone she can accept money from someone. If she is being harassed or coerced, then the person committing the crime should be arrested.

Kolbrun Halldorsdottir, who first proposed the law, said on Wednesday, “It is not acceptable that women, or people in general, are a product to be sold.”

Really? Who fucking says? It's not "acceptable?" So, some people don't like it when people get paid to titillate other people. I say, fuck them.

If a stripping ban is advanced by religious groups ostensibly to protect women, then it's "oh! no! can't have that!" But, when it's advanced by a self-avowed "feminist" who tells us what SHE thinks is acceptable for women to do with their own bodies, then it all makes perfect sense....thunderous applause... :lay:

I agree, if a woman chooses to do this, and is suitably protected against exploitation then why not. :nono:
I can see not having them near schools, residential areas etc, but never an outright ban.
(Oh fuck I've just agreed with CES!)

Wonders never cease. I even agree with you about local ordinances concerning locations - not near schools, residential areas, etc.

Well it is a cold country. You could have someone's eye out with a nipple. :hehe:

Oh for fuck's sake. There's nothing progressive or liberal about banning things. What we're dealing with here is the so-called "moral majority" who are basically your gran and granddad whining about morality and how they're right and every one else is wrong so it must be that way end of. You know the type I mean.

Stop making sense. It's immoral.

Whilst I agree that people should not be bought or sold, if someone threw money at me because I was naked I'd probably do it for a living too. It isn't the same thing. Slavery is buying and selling, that is turning people into commodities. Whilst strippers can be and regularly are abused in certain clubs, keeping it legal gives them options and rights as workers.

A great deal of feminists are sex-positive and would have no problem with women dancing nude.

Well, that would surely be better remedy with mandatory nipple-warming stations.

Read the articles about this. This is a "feminist" movement.

If that were true, I would agree with you. But it isn't. It's a feminist movement.

If they're doing it right, yes.

Saying strippers are bought and sold is the same as saying factory workers are bought and sold. We're all selling our time and effort.

That's true. However, this current movement in Iceland is based on the other kind, the kind that knows what proper female behavior is (for their own good).

This means war!!! :mob: :mob: :mob: :mob: :mob:

I volunteer my services to lead the US Atlantic Fleet in a show-of-force off the coast of Reykjavik. If they don't open up the strip clubs, we shall commence bombardment.

Be nice if there was actually some content to discuss instead of opinion of ________________________ ?

If Iceland is concerned about organized crime.....which controls much of the sex trade then the gov may have determined that an outright ban was the only solution....

Please people, it's a small nation, only 300,000 a middling city.
It may have been a negative on the tourist trade which they really need just now and it may have been any other number of reasons.....

I somehow doubt there is lot of religious significance to this at all.....but without any substance to the thread it's idle gossip.

I enjoy nude bodies, I don't enjoy those that are coerced into it which seems the case far too often.

How about some substantive context instead of a rant. :coffee:

progressive and liberal politics
lolno.

Also, some content instead of a ranty post would be nice, like a link, for example.

So, as long as it's not a religious ban, it's o.k. to ban strip clubs? Under what circumstances is a ban of all strip clubs o.k.?

http://www.guardian.co.uk/lifeandstyle/ ... st-country
Even more impressive: the Nordic state is the first country in the world to ban stripping and lapdancing for feminist, rather than religious, reasons. Kolbrún Halldórsdóttir, the politician who first proposed the ban, firmly told the national press on Wednesday: "It is not acceptable that women or people in general are a product to be sold." When I asked her if she thinks Iceland has become the greatest feminist country in the world, she replied: "It is certainly up there. Mainly as a result of the feminist groups putting pressure on parliamentarians. These women work 24 hours a day, seven days a week with their campaigns and it eventually filters down to all of society."

Great, so instead of stripping they go in to illegal prostitution or work for even less money at a check out.
