Obama's speech today at NASA

Post by oddmanout » Thu Apr 15, 2010 8:09 pm

What did you think about it?

I was, unfortunately, disturbed by everyday life when listening to this speech (live), so I missed the most important parts. I heard something about the new Orion rocket (?) having a deadline of 2015, which will be a rocket powerful enough to go beyond the moon (and, eventually, to Mars). Also, the budget was raised with 6 billion US dollars, and something about 2000+ job opportunities being created. Someone should be able to fill in the rest (and provide a link to the speech once available) but I also heard him mention the year 2024 (?) as an important date.

He said he wished that "we" would land on Mars before he's dead (or something to that effect)

America, fuck yeah! :woot:

Addit: Link to the speech and transcript.

It was shit.

Firstly, all NASA will do in future is a 50/50 split of robotic missions and tech infrastructure (telecoms, GPS etc). He basically handed space to corporations, and the Mars prophecy is bullshit. America is not going to Mars. China is.

I think Meeky is right :nono:

He has a way of speaking that makes you feel like he is telling you good news even when it's shit.

You're probably right :(

It's just that I've always dreamed of witnessing something like the Moon landing. In a weird, egotistical kind of way, witnessing the day humanity sets foot on Mars would add meaning to my life (not that I think it doesn't have meaning now). Perhaps there's something wrong with me, but watching old footage of the Moon landing is almost like a religious experience.

But anyways, I do hope that the USA will continue to fund the space program.

Here's a link to the video and a transcript of the speech.

Given the state of America's economy I think he had little choice - in the short term anyway.

I wish they would just dump Trident here - our 'nuclear deterrent' - would wipe out the deficit more or less in one go.

But we needs Trident for to protect ourselves against the French Iranians.

If they did that, what would stop the Muslims from invading the UK?

Oh, wait . . .

Not seen the broadcast but robotic missions are far better VFM than manned anyway.

Besides, China ain't going to Mars, India is.....

Imagine, the first Test being played on Mars.......

You know, if we just said "There are Jews on Mars!" we'd have a manned mission there next week. Which would then promptly explode.

Aah, of course! It all makes sense now.. Neil Armstrong was really Lien Gnortsmra (it has a Jewish ring to it, doesn't it?! Coincidence?! I think not), a covetous Jew who smuggled diamonds to the Moon for later transport further away in the solar system! Wow, I think we are on to something here!

On a more serious note, how much does this cost the British taxpayers?

I think a replacement for Trident is estimated to cost about £100 Billion, over the service lifetime of the system. One can't help but think that money could be spent on something more useful.
