Coffee vs. Tea: A political movement is brewing

Washington (CNN) -- The new Coffee Party movement deemed its official kickoff Saturday a "huge success," with dozens of talks held at coast-to-coast coffee shops as members came together to discuss the issues most important to them.

Billed by many as an answer to the conservative Tea Party movement, the Coffee Party was born on Facebook just six weeks ago. While the group has become an instant hit online -- it boasts more than 141,000 Facebook fans as of Saturday -- gauging the success of this weekend's coffee meetups was predicted to be an indicator of the group's strength.

let's start a coffee party . . . smoothie party. red bull party. anything but tea. geez. ooh how about cappuccino party? that would really piss 'em off bec it sounds elitist . . . let's get together and drink cappuccino and have real political dialogue with substance and compassion.

Yeah, I think it's a good counter to them. I doubt it will bloom into a full-fledged political movement, but it sends the message that a lot of people oppose the lunacy of the Tea Party.

I joined it on Facebook. There's no underlying message except political civility. Tea Party types tend to be very negative, angry, insular, judgemental, partisan, etc. Coffee Party is merely a means of mocking them while also calling for nonpartisanship.

Sounds good to me. I'm a liberal and I don't like the direction MoveOn is taking lately. They support the current healthcare bill the way it is. There's still too much giveaways in it for the insurance industry for my taste. I'll have to look into this party a little more and see if it fills my cup. Cheers!
