No, I was pointing out that plenty of people don't want to be in the EU, and it seems rather unlikely that it's primarily a product of xenophobia, unless one is saying that the majority of Norwegians and Icelanders, etc. are "xenophobic." It seems to me that the racism allegation is a common retort from "the left" against their opposition, so it's a bit like crying wolf. It's heard so many times, in so many contexts, and with precious little in the way of evidence -- it's more of an assumption of what must be motivating those folks that we already know are hateful, racist sons-a-bitches....

and partly in Europe, and since 1989 it has seriously been considered a potential EU member. It's the EU that put its application on hold, and not because it's mostly in Asia.

They may have done so for the reason that they thought the EU is an anti-democratic organization which makes law for the UK without the UK being properly represented. Like Jeremy Corbyn said when he voted against Maastricht in 1993, the EU had handed control to “an unelected set of bankers” https://www.theyworkforyou.com/debates/ ... -20a.389.4 More recently Corbyns said the EU has “always suffered from a serious democratic deficit”. It could also be that the Brexiters thought it would be more in the national interest over the long term.

Not wanting to make a country which is already relatively open and welcoming "more" open and welcoming is not xenophobia. It's got borders, it's a country. They are allowed to act in their interest.

No, Icelanders are racist because they don't seem to want to join the EU. Anyone who doesn't want to be in the EU is doing so because they're racist and xenophobic. Economic and political reasons can have nothing to with it. So when Brexiters say they want out because they don't like the EU government and don't think it's very democratic, and they think the UK will fare better politically and economically outside the EU, like some other European countries do, that's just a euphemism or code for "keep out the darkies and the Muslims."

I've talked to members of my family who voted Leave about this, one a staunch union supporter and another a life-long Labour voter. Both of them voted Leave not because they thought membership of the EU undermined British Parliamentary Sovereignty, nor because they thought Britain paid too much money into the pot for little or no benefit (two of the main Leave campaigns arguments), but because they held this strange (received?) idea that there are just too many foreigners coming into the country and that leaving the EU was the only way to stop our essential Britishness being diluted by outsiders. Phrases like, "When you walk down the high street these days you hear more Pakistani and Polish accents than you do British accents," or "Every plumber an his mate seem to be Polish or Czech," or, "The girls in Costa Coffee don't understand English," were typical. I don't think these blokes are necessarily racist, or xenophobic - just misinformed, deliberately so.

Iceland and Norway are in the European Economic Area, which means they accept and abide by the four freedoms of the European Union, including freedom of movement, while not actually being a part of the EU. So they're very bad examples to support your "point", if I can call it that.

The point was to address the notion that a Brexit vote was necessarily a racist and xenophobic vote. There are plenty of other reasons not to want to be in the EU. It often seems like the go-to allegation to call anyone supposedly aligned on the "right" to be racist and xenophobic.
