Stupid laws apply the distinction between children as adults as a sharp separation. Good laws recognize that their are differences between individuals with regard to their maturity.

For some purposes, a somewhat arbitrary distinction such as needing to be 18 to get a driver's licence will save endless argument.

In many countries, there isn't a sharp distinction. For example, over here, you can make the driver's license for some vehicles starting at 16. You can make a driver's license starting at 16, but you can then drive between 16 and 18 only when in the company of an adult. Even for people over 18, there is a difference. Between 18 and 21 the driver's license can be taken away more easily. Score some points by disobeying traffic laws and you lose the license where a person over 21 would have kept it.

Sure, skin colour is genetic, but is that sufficient reason to speak of different races among humans? If so, why not divide along race lines depending on some other genetic criteria. like whether one's eyes are blue, hair is blond or one is righthanded?

"Black People" in Southern India, Central Africa, Melanesia, New Guinea, Central America have different genes which express themselves as 'dark skinned'.

I cannot imagine what the advantages might be of dividing the human race into arbitrary pockets of genetic clusters.

It says "by genetic definition...races don't exist." Yes, but that doesn't mean races don't exist. It means there is variation within "races" which can be greater than variations between "races." That's what I've been saying. When I wrote that race didn't have to be genetic, I was told I was nuts. Now you're saying that the citation that I cited shows I'm stupid, because it says that races aren't genetic. I've been saying that.

I think the problem is that certain people want so bad to make this a "spot the racist" argument, that they aren't listening. I think the key is -- when they say genetics is not determinative of race, and there are no races GENETICALLY, does that mean there are no races AT ALL, or that there's no such thing as "race?"

That depends on which definition of ethnicity you're using. But, I would say not synonymous, because ethnicity involves a greater variety of subgroups - like ethnically Polish or ethnically Irish or ethnically Danish. They're all racially white or Europid, but they have different ethnicities.

I think most of this discussion, however, has been two sides talking past each other.
