Homicide by firearms rate per 100,000 pop.: USA - 3.43 Germany - 0.07 Ratio: 49 to 1
Unintentional deaths by firearms per 100,000 pop.: USA - 0.18 Germany - 0.01 Ratio: 18 to 1

And since this thread is about mass shootings in particular, here are the relevant figures from a pro-gun site.

Annual death rate from mass public shootings from January 2009 to December 2015 per million pop.: USA - 0.089 Germany - 0.023 Ratio: 3.9 to 1

So, no matter which figures you look at, there's a lesson here for those with more than fractional wit indeed: Based on the figures, gun control laws work.

But Seth's argument is sound - you can't stop people killing other people. If killer don't have guns they'll use a stick or a car or the economic system or whatever. A a gun redresses the imbalance in the souped-up game of rock, paper scissors that is life. His point is that gun control promotes random violence, that sterner gun controls in the US would increase the frequency of and casualty rate from gun incidents just as more lax gun controls in Europe would reduce the frequency and casualty rate of gun incidents. You can't argue with logic which asserts that kind of future as fact while maintaining that society isn't ordered and peaceful by common agreement but l by the application of force and/or the threat thereof.

I mean, I would trust Seth not to shoot me in the face if we were having a heated political disagreement in a coffee shop, he just maintains that it is foolish of me to do so - so I should be packing just in case.

Seth would be right had I argued that you can stop people killing other people. I didn't, so he isn't. In fact, I have made a point of not only furnishing figures for murder by firearms but murders by any means to make it clear that I am aware that people will use other means to kill if no guns come to hand. That said, it is abundantly clear that Germany has less than a quarter of the US murder rate. If Seth's mantra he copied from the likes of John Lott was right, Germany's rate should be higher than the USA's.

Meh. Wouldn't surprise me at all if Israeli intelligence knew the attack was going to happen and declined to tell the French authorities but decided to tip off a journalist or two so they could document the attack. Informing the French police would be much like sending an email to ISIS telling them Israel has infiltrated their command structure.

Israel's duty is to Israel, screw the French, who haven't exactly been great friends to Israel anyway.

But that doesn't mean either the French or the Israelis were part of planning or executing the attack. Never attribute to conspiracy what can be adequately explained by stupidity, cupidity or arrogance, something the French police are famous for.

Social darwinists advocated positions such as the following:

1. Individuals and companies compete in the marketplace in an identical way to individual organism competing for resources, then out-breeding their rivals. Natural is conflated with good.

2. Poor people should be given no assistance, as they are poor because they are failures in the race to succeed which they take to be human society.

3. People with any form of genetic disability should be forcibly sterilised.

All these ideas resonate best with right-wing rather than left-wing thinking.
