No, Mr. Obtuse. That's not all that liberty is, but the liberty to eat what you want, drink what you want, and say what you want, is a part of liberty. Maybe not in your world, where liberty means "do as you're told."

Oh, like some kind of librarian utopia. A world of small children who don't wanna be told to do anything regardless of the harm it causes others. OK.Coito ergo sum wrote:No, Mr. Obtuse. Some of the American Indian cultures did not apply direct discipline to their children. Discipline came later as the children vied for adult privileges and adult status.sandinista wrote:Oh, like some kind of librarian utopia. Not libertarian. Just a liberal republic that protects fundamental liberties in large measure, rather than an authoritarian regime that governs and nitpicks every aspect of our lives. You like the latter, I prefer the former. Got it. I must have missed the part about the "harm" eating Big Macs, speaking one's mind, and having abortions does to "others." But, I'm sure you'll provide a clear explanation of that.sandinista wrote:Oh, like some kind of librarian utopia. Don't tell me what I "like"...you have no clue. Got it. Eating shit macs causes massive harm to animals and the environment (which of course causes massive harm to human animals as well). Abortions, free speech? Who the fuck ever said there was anything wrong with abortions or free speech?Coito ergo sum wrote:Not libertarian. Re meat diets and bad smells--
I remember when the Atkins diet was popular, seeing warnings at the gym about ketosis-- a metabolic state that's induced when the body doesn't have certain sorts of nutrients (sugars, I think.) People with Diabetes I can get this, and peole on low-carb, high-protein diets like Atkins.
It can cause really nasty bad breath. But I can't find any evidence re- body odor.
My family (the one I grew up in) eats a LOT of meat. I don't. I think I smell less than I did when I ate like they did. But how would I know?

Re: Ban Ronald McDonald?
Ketosis comes from ingesting very little carbohydrate - either starch or sugar. I've been in ketosis all winter, while fruit, which are my only significant source of carbs, are expensive. I'll probably drop out at times over the summer as various fruits come into season and I eat more of them.hadespussercats wrote:Re meat diets and bad smells--

Ketosis results in acetone in the breath, which can be smelled. Whether it's a bad smell may be a matter of opinion. Standard nail polish remover is acetone, so it probably smells similar. Ketosis seems to decrease, not increase, body odor for me and for most other people I know who are in it. However, the people I know who eat ketogenic diets don't follow Atkins, and specifically eschew dairy, which might affect things.
Here's a scientific paper on the breath of people in ketosis:

Skip showers, baths, and deodorant until you can smell your own body odor, then count the number of days you've gone without washing. You'd need to test this on both diets, of course. My family (the one I grew up in) eats a LOT of meat. I don't. I think I smell less than I did when I ate like they did. But how would I know?

Sandy, I ought to send you a .pdf of the Wealth of nations and an MP3 of Deutschland über Alles for putting that up, and I think I'm going to have a nice burger today, and fantasies of wafting by MS meat and onion laden breath to your nose.

Mmmm...pass the BO cheez!Isovaleric acid (3-methyl butanoic acid) is the other source of body odor as a result of actions of the bacteria Staphylococcus epidermidis,[3] which is also present in several strong cheese types.

Yeah - see if the burger you ACTUALLY get looks anything like that ad agency propaganda lie.Gallstones wrote:I am really craving a cheeseburger loaded right now.

You'll get a soggy bun with some frumpy lettuce showing, and a meat patty so small you can't even see it unless you lift off the top of the bun...
