Re: The Thread of BREXIT
Two contrasting articles on the same subject highlight the UKs cultural and political divide over the EU...
theguardian.com wrote:Theresa May has angered European leaders by telling her first EU summit that she expects Britain to be at the centre of European decision-making until Brexit takes place.
In a brief speech at the end of an EU dinner in Brussels, the prime minister said Britain wanted to continue to play a central role in meetings and decisions until it leaves the EU.
The speech angered fellow leaders, according to Manfred Weber, leader of the Christian Democrats in the European parliament. He said: “When somebody wants to leave a club, it is not normal that such a member wants to decide about the future of this club. That is really creating a lot of anger about the behaviour of the British government.
“If you want to leave please do so, but don’t decide for the European Union.”
He added: “It is not about institutions in Brussels, its about whether the British prime minister in the next years is still at the table, and the majority decided to not sit anymore on the centre of the European debate, and that is not good.”,,,

Theresa May has been rounded on by EU leaders, who demanded that Britain continue to accept hundreds of thousands of migrants if it is to have any hope of accessing the single market.
The Prime Minister faced a series of threats from her counterparts as she arrived at her first European Council meeting in Brussels.
She will on Friday hold talks with Jean-Claude Juncker, the president of the European Commission, who is expected to criticise her over signals that the Government is pushing for a clean break from Brussels rather than a compromise solution.
However, Mrs May on Thursday faced a barrage of criticism as she arrived in Brussels.
François Hollande, the French president, told her he intends to make exit negotiations "hard" if Mrs May pushes for a "hard Brexit".
He said: "I have said it very firmly to her. [If ] Theresa May wants a hard Brexit, the negotiations will be hard."
Mrs May later was rebuffed by EU leaders when she complained that the Britain could not be expected to rubber-stamp decisions taken on policies and plans cooked up by the other 27 member states who last month held a major summit in Bratislava without Britain....

Just a taste of what's to come.EU leaders make Theresa May wait until 1am to give five-minute Brexit speech, before ignoring herEU leaders made Theresa May wait until 1am to deliver her message that Britain will not change its mind about Brexit - and gave her just five minutes to speak, before ignoring her speech.
At a Brussels dinner, the Prime Minister was made to wait until “long after the waiters were waiting to clear the dishes away”, one observer said.
No other leader spoke in response to Ms May’s brief speech – a united front reflecting the EU’s refusal to start exit negotiations until the formal Article 50 notice is invoked, early next year.

Re: The Thread of BREXIT
The press were briefed yesterday by No 10 and told that May would make a statement to the room at the close of business. It's interesting then that the Independent chose to cast it as her being made to wait until the close of business to make her statement - as interesting as the Telegraph trying to make it seem relevant to the immigration issue.

Re: The Thread of BREXIT
If I was living in another EU country, I'd be giving serious thought to getting out too.
I was fifty fifty at the time of the referendum, and didn't vote. But now I'd vote out.
Why would anybody want to stay in a gang that openly admits to intimidation of members to deter them from leaving? Because that's exactly what European bigwigs are saying, openly. Not behind closed doors.
We will make life difficult for leavers. To keep the sheep in the fold.
In fact, any trade restrictions imposed on the UK will cost jobs both sides of the channel. The UK will of course meet any tarriffs with equal tarriffs. Restrictions on UK financial services will be met with tarriffs on BMWs and Mercedes. Or they would if I was in power.
You just impose measures to equal out the harm done.
So who will pay? Not the European fat cats. The workers in Renault, and BMW etc, as well as workers on this side.
BUT, the EU will be creaming import taxes, to pay the salaries of the fat cats. Why would they care about people who work for a living?
I think more will be tempted, as time goes on. The EU needs gigantic change, or people will go, one by one.
Maybe we should set up a rival group, for leavers? A single market, without all the shit that goes with it?

Re: The Thread of BREXIT
I don't think the EU is being particularly difficult: I think that depends on what one's goto source is on the matter and what one's expectations are. Article 50 is a fixed and agreed process. Renegotiating it would take the agreement of all EU member-states as any renegotiation would apply to all members, not just the UK. In the meantime, the UK either follows the Article 50 process or it doesn't. As we're leaving the EU Article 50 is the only means of doing that in an ordered and orderly manner, and only once we've officially disengaged from the EU will we be in a position to negotiate our relationship with it anew.

The problem is that as the Pound falls, prices will go up. Re: The Thread of BREXIT
You know mistermack it is really about time you learnt how the EU works. Like so many leavers you have not got a clue. Little England will become a worthless little island once Scotland and Northern Ireland has left. Leavers never had a plan and still dont have a plan and it is obvious by your comments you dont know bugger all about what is going on.
Who is deterring whom? England deterring Scotland from taking her own course when she overwhelmingly voted to stay? Only England and Wales(for completely the wrong reasons but that is the taffs for you) voted to leave.
Where is parliamentary democracy? Who forcing her will without recourse to the democratic process? Leave won by 2% you would not think it.
