'Advocates Warn GOP Just Unveiled "Most Dangerous Higher Ed Bill in US History"'

At a markup session held by a U.S. House committee on the Republican Party's recently unveiled higher education reform bill Tuesday, one Democratic lawmaker had a succinct description for the legislation.

"This bill is a dream-killer," said Rep. Suzanne Bonamici (D-Ore.) of the so-called Student Success and Taxpayer Savings Plan, which was introduced by Education and Workforce Committee Chairman Tim Walberg (R-Mich.) as part of an effort to find $330 billion in education programs to offset President Donald Trump's tax plan.

Tasked with helping to make $4.5 trillion in tax cuts for the wealthiest Americans possible, Walberg on Monday proposed changes to the Pell Grant program, which has provided financial aid to more than 80 million low-income students since it began in 1972. The bill would allocate more funding to the program but would also reduce the number of students who are eligible for the grants, changing the definition of a "full-time" student to one enrolled in at least 30 semester hours each academic year—up from 12 hours. Students would be cut off from the financial assistance entirely if they are enrolled less than six hours per semester.

David Baime, senior vice president for government relations for the American Association of Community Colleges, suggested the legislation doesn't account for the realities faced by many students who benefit from Pell Grants.

"These students are almost always working a substantial number of hours each week and often have family responsibilities. Pell Grants help them meet the cost of tuition and required fees," Baime told Inside Higher Ed. "We commend the committee for identifying substantial additional resources to help finance Pell, but it should not come at the cost of undermining the ability of low-income working students to enroll at a community college."

The draft bill would also end subsidized loans, which don't accrue interest when a student is still in college and gives borrowers a six-month grace period after graduation, starting in July 2026. More than 30 million borrowers currently have subsidized loans.

At the center of Vought’s ideology is the unitary executive theory, which critics say amounts to an argument that Trump should have wide latitude to do whatever he wants."

All the talk in Washington is that Elon Musk will be ending or cutting back his time working for Trump.

A Trump administration official, who requested anonymity to share internal discussions, says Vought is widely perceived as preparing to pick up wherever Musk leaves off. Where Musk has shown a zeal for smash and grab, Vought has the institutional knowledge—and perhaps the patience—to make the DOGE cuts stick. Vought, this person says, “is waiting in the wings.”

Vought worked in the White House during the first Trump term eventually becoming the Director of the Office of Management and Budget (OMB).

"Vought approached his tenure at the OMB, first as deputy director and later as director, with the zeal of an activist. “The left has innovated over 100 years to create this fourth branch” of government, he told the right-wing talk show host Tucker Carlson in a late 2024 interview, in recalling his work during the first Trump administration. “You and I might call it ‘the regime’—this administrative state that is totally unaccountable to the president.” The notion of a secret “regime” controlled by what Vought described as an unholy alliance of lobbyists, corrupt members of Congress, media elite and intelligence agencies became popular among members of the far right as a way to explain Trump’s ineffectiveness during his first term. As Vought saw it, the main job of the OMB was to “tame the bureaucracy” and “bring them to heel to do what the president is telling them to do.”

Perhaps you should address your concerns with the current administration as the issues with countries blocking our exports happened due to inconsistency with tariffs. Congress is not using the powers that are afforded to them by the constitution to hold the president to any standards. except the idiotic tariff amounts being imposed on foreign goods is actually killing nebraska like they did the first time trump unintelligently used them. the first time around it nearly destroyed our soybean farmers as the main country trump targeted happened to be our biggest soy bean buyer and look what happened....they cancelled orders and started to by from south america and russia. this time around it is our beef suppliers that are getting hit.....china is not buying beef from us and has now gone to Australia for their beef.
