There's actually big conflict there. The states know...who was born there. That's about it. But only the feds know the citizenship. They also have fingerprints of every naturalized citizen.

My state will give the ones born here a free birth certificate to register. That was all we did for "voter ID" till now. There is no way to know if the person holding that paper was the right person. But we had a different world till 2016.

The last round of mail voting you wrote the driver's license in the inner envelope.

Is there an issue with “registered to vote” being the default state for all citizens? Also, what’s the problem here exactly?

If the states can’t tell who’s a citizen they need to work with the feds.

Bet if I were asking the state for just about anything they’d know my status…

Poor US, greatest country on God’s green Earth can’t find a way to automatically register citizens for voting. The list of things others manage to do that the greatest country can’t keeps growing…

Voter registration is all done at the local level with the town or city you live in for Federal, State, and local (council-like) elections. So they need to know down to the street address to put you in the appropriate local election districts. So if you move, you have to go to the town office and tell them to update your voter records.

Why is voter registration a special case? If you automatically register citizens then that registration and it’s relevant bits just become part of what’s updated whenever the state becomes aware of changes, which happens all the time. :dunno:

There's a nearly infinite supply of 'yeahbut' when it comes to excuses for suppressing the vote. It doesn't matter that the putative problem (voter fraud) has been repeatedly and reliably shown to be extremely rare, because nobody (aside from thoroughly indoctrinated rubes) actually believes that the measures taken to suppress the vote are truly aimed at preventing fraud.

The people who engineer voting suppression schemes know what they're doing. Their claims to be concerned about fraud are transparently performative. In my opinion, carrying water for them is contemptible.

'Aware of changes', the exact date doesn't really matter unless its close to an election and they are not sure which local district they are eligible to vote in. With early and mail in ballots, things get get extra complicated. Maybe those smart boys at DOGE can think of an easier way :{D

I’m sure they could. In California they use provisional ballots:
Voters who have moved within their county without re-registering to vote. The voter's name is not on the polling place roster because they moved within the county but did not re-register to vote. This also happens when a voter updates their driver's license with the Department of Motor Vehicles (DMV) but the DMV's computer system doesn't update the voter's registration information, as it is required to do by law. In either instance, the voter is entitled to vote a provisional ballot at the polling place based on their current address. The elections official is required to count the ballot if the voter's signature on the provisional ballot envelope matches the signature on the voter's prior registration form. The elections official is then required to re-register the voter at their new address for all future elections. (Elections Code sections 14310, 14311, 15350, 15100 et seq.)

In the For the People Act of 2021, which would have required automatic voter registration everywhere, these cases might have been addressed by allowing election day registrations and updates. :hairfire:

We have zero issues of this nature in Australia, with a straightforward neutral Electoral Commission and easy voter registration. In the past, the US trumpeted its role as the leading democracy of the free world. Eroded now...
