The Coronavirus Thread
Re: The Coronavirus Thread
It's not only easy, it's cliche to hate the US for doing good.
Especially by the countries that aren't. They are greedy, and over-stock on some stuff.
But a lot of us do that.
I've been eating more than I need for a very long time. It's fair to say that many of us have. Maybe it's ok to hate us a bit for it.

Re: The Coronavirus Thread
Sure, there can be an automatic hatred by some countries or individuals of the US, for a variety of reasons. In some cases, that may lead to irrational blame for their actions. Not in this case, however; there does seem to be a good chance that the actions of the US could be described as unethical, a clear case of behaving like the classic dog in the manger...
But this should make you happy - it seems to be a Biden administration problem!

Re: The Coronavirus Thread
I think it's a pr problem.
My pal organized the rollout here. I don't know anything about it. Haven't talked to her at all, really. I am very sympathetic because I like her and think about her.
It occurred to me that logistics (teams, surveys, or however they do it) may have demanded a large surplus be delivered for any number of reasons. They aren't the only ones. Everyone maybe feels a bit 'belt & suspenders'
It could be greed, it could be painted that way. Once the crisis is over, it doesn't sound like something anyone would want to be greedy about. (any one nation, I mean)

Re: The Coronavirus Thread
Hoarding sounds like a framing bias.
The latest fad is a poverty social. Every woman must wear calico,
and every man his old clothes. In addition each is fined 25 cents if
he or she does not have a patch on his or her clothing. If these
parties become a regular thing, says an exchange, won't there be
a good chance for newspaper men to shine?

Re: The Coronavirus Thread
You might be correct there. But once the supply chain situation settles down, and well-planned, efficient delivery of vaccines gets into its stride, wealthy countries will need to have a good, hard look at their stocks, and make sure that any not needed are delivered to places in the world that need them.Cunt wrote: ↑Sun Mar 14, 2021 2:16 amI think it's a pr problem.

It is somewhat pejorative. Perhaps it is too early to call it that, but the article certainly suggested that the US may end up with more vaccine doses than it needs. Maybe the planning is still fluid, and when things are tied down better, the authorities there may be able to release what they don't need. If so, any charge of hoarding can be dismissed.

Re: The Coronavirus Thread
Maybe we are hoarding. But we've also done an awful job of combating the virus, and with Italy's refusal to send vaccines to Australia also being labeled nationalist hoarding, despite its 100,000+ deaths to Australia's what, 1,000? --I'm skeptical.

Re: The Coronavirus Thread
No one here is worried about that (although politicians will make noises, of course). There are 2 good reasons; one you've mentioned, that we are in a very fortunate position in terms of case numbers. The second is that we are about to start manufacturing vaccine right here in Melbourne next week, which will ramp up to a million doses per week at its peak. Hopefully we will be able to supply all the Pacific as well as our own population...Sean Hayden wrote: ↑Sun Mar 14, 2021 3:32 amMaybe we are hoarding. Re: The Coronavirus Thread
A crazy fact. We produce the vaccine here but because of old contracts they have to be bottled in the US where from of course they never return. We have plenty of bottling facilities here but only those old contracts stand in the way and being honest we accept them instead of like the US disregarding them.

Hire Trump. He did 'operation light speed' to sweep such bureaucratic obstacles away. Hiden Biden is still enjoying accolades of those coattails.Scot Dutchy wrote: ↑Sun Mar 14, 2021 2:57 pmA crazy fact. He wears orange well, I think he'd fit right in. And he IS looking for a new gig.
Re: The Coronavirus Thread
Trump introduced the problem by banning exports of vaccines. His rulings (maintained by Biden) are the reason Canada gets their vaccine from the EU and not the US. If the EU had done the same as the US has done (ban on exports), Canada would be without a vaccine for the foreseeable future.
