No. But it should be remembered and understood, IMO.

And, countries/peoples need not bury their histories because of things that are distasteful. Treat every man after his desert, and who shall 'scape whipping?

No culture or country is innocent, and almost all flags fly over some historical atrocity. Shit, every North American and European flag flies over centuries of anti-gay and anti-LGBTQ++ policies, and even atrocities against same - executions, imprisonments, discrimination, etc. Shall we not fly those flags now?

Understand the "evils" of the past, as well as the good. Accept and own the past. Move on and try to be better. Does anyone think suppression of flags with St. Andrew's cross and some stars on it is going to change the attitudes of people with distasteful attitudes?

I prefer to take back the flag from those people who have attempted to commandeer it and own it. Let the racists identify themselves publicly however they like. It's good to know who they are and where they are. Sunlight is a great disinfectant (of ideas).

The point was, actually, that if flags that flew over slavery are verboten, then most countries' flags need to be taken down and changed. Even the US flag and the UK flag -- who engaged in the triangle slave trade? What flag flew over a large chunk of the fleets of slave ships hauling humans like cargo of sardines? What about the Portuguese flag? The Brazilian flag? The Spanish flags that flew over genocide and enslavement of native american peoples?

There's a sort of reverse situation to this confederate flag thing happening in Australia for the last decade or so. The famous (in Australia) Eureka Stockade southern cross flag. Perhaps like the Civil War, there are varying interpretations of exactly what the Eureka Stockade stood for. But from my perspective it's pretty decidedly a worker and minority solidarity flag. For years it was the "battle flag" of sorts for the fairly militant workers union the BLF (Builders Labourers Federation). So it has a long history of being a flag of solidarity and union. In the last decade or so it has increasingly been co-opted by racists who take the view that it stands for the good old days when people could own guns and hold armed rebellions and shoot uppity Chinese fossickers. The BLF no longer exists, but one of it's ideological descendants - the CFMEU, goes into battle with us anarchists and hippies and socialists and other lefties when we hold Antifa (Anti-Fascist) rallies concurrently against the neo-racists/nationalists/fascists.
