I think maybe athletes can be forgiven for not turning up for European Athletics in July when the Olympics are in August .
What is an Olympic specialist anyway ? world records are easier to set at the Olympics ? gold medals worth less in a World competition than a European one ?
Cyclists........[sarcasm]Yeah you are totally right[/sarcasm] They never turn up for any other events .....Who won The Tour this year and incidentally The Herald Sun Tour?

PS Actually Britain came 3rd in the European Athletics medals list this year

Why sour grapes? Just stating what is apparent.
 Oh come off it Scotty. What's apparent is that every competitor at the Olympics is an Olympic specialist because they're all the top sports competitors in their sports - they're all competition specialist! You clearly don't get a place on an Olympic team without a proven record in your chosen field--unless you have an uncle in the Zimbabwe sports and culture ministry of course--and you certainly don't get a medal unless you go faster, further, stronger, better than the competition. If it was any other way the Olympics wouldn't mean very much as a competition.

One might as well say that the only reason someone wins a gold medal at the Olympics is because the other teams don't specialise in winning competitions!

If the GBR cycling golds are somehow devalued because the competitors are only Olympic specialists then Anna van der Breggen and Elis Ligtlee cycling golds are devalued for the same reason, surely? The Netherlands has a deep and rich cycling tradition, but saying that other nations' cyclists cycled faster than Netherlanders (or anybody else) only because they specialise in cycling faster than everybody else in the competition does kind of sound like sour grapes.

But I do know where you're coming from, because every time England lose a football or rugby match we hear the same complaints from pundits and commentators about how the other team somehow didn't win on merit. The post-match babbling of commentators and pundits are opinions, not facts. The only fact in sport is that someone wins and everybody else is a loser.

Dutch cyclist Laurine van Riessen should have got a medal for avoiding turning a nasty crash into a pileup during the women's Keirin final.

They're going to drain and refill the green swimming pool. Damn they're a useless bunch of twats.

Aussie Kim Brennan’s Olympic gold in the rowing was particularly well deserved considering she had to push through breakers and her boat filled with water during the heats. Such pluck.

Why don't they have more interesting sports? I want to see some real sports that real people also play, like snooker, darts, 10 pin bowling, competitive eating, artistic wine bottle opening, or bacon curing. How about one-handed joint rolling? Willie Nelson would dominate, man. Pokémon catching would be very popular, as would texting while driving. C'mon, I.O.C., b more inclusive!
