What I don't understand about this is why is the area not fenced off? Sure, there's signs there, but we are talking about large predators and an urban setting.

It is fenced off, well a large amount of the property. It's 26 square miles and gators sneak in occasionally.

My neighbor the retired State Trooper is now the city Fire Marshal. He took a tour of the City campgrounds last night, and a woman was sitting next to a campfire, on a propane cylinder. He said the fire was blistering the paint.

Sounds like an exaggeration to me. If the fire blistered the paint, the woman's knees would have been significantly more than uncomfortable.

She was apparently up and down.

While sitting on the cylinder? I guess this may have been due to some safety valve forcefully releasing the extra pressure caused in the tank by the blistering heat.

No. A person innocently scoots a tank up close to the fire. Then she has a seat. Then she gets up to get another beer, gets to talking with someone, then comes back and plops down right as the Fire Marshal comes along and points out she's sitting on a fucking bomb like some kind of drunken leering skeleton in an an old German woodcut.

And there's a video to prove it. Also the branding mark the woman got on her botty when she sat down.

Naa. A lot of mild steel mass in the tank, poor conductor as metals go. The tank is not going to become uniformly hot like it were aluminum. You got the liquid boiling off to gas in there too, throwing off your conductivity curves.
And who knows? It may well have been a plastic wrapper bubbling on the side of the propane cylinder...


Sean, the fire marshal, crashed a helicopter one morning back when he worked for the Troopers. Two months later, he came hobbling into Kiana or someplace, all fucked up like Hugh Glass. After that the Troopers made him a sergeant and sent him to Harvard for a couple years.

People blaming the parents, give me a break. Yes, it's Florida, but when you are on your Disney vacation sitting around in the evening with your toddler splashing in a few inches of water I think it's unlikely you expect gators to be around. If it WAS likely they would have had signs as they do in many places. It was unexpected and terrible, but I don't think you can reasonably place the blame on either the parents or the park. It's just a tragic situation.

Malawi: Hungry Crocs Preying On Innocent Human Lives

MANGOCHI — It has now become a common phenomenon to hear about that so and so has been attacked by a crocodile in Lake Malawi and the Shire River respectively in Mangochi.


At least a month will never pass by before you get to hear about someone losing his or her life to a crocodile attack and the most recently incident is of a ten year boy who was attacked by the reptile in Shire River.

Shame, poor little dude. But yeah, it's the parent's fault. Gators are all over the show, if you don't know if there's a gator then there's a gator. That's the safest attitude.

Thank god for you. If there's one thing that is vital in events like this it is the assignment of blame.

On reflection I am incorrect. These folks were from Nebraska and wouldn't know an alligator from a manatee. The fault lies with Disney, for not warning people to stay away from the waters edge. Those of us who grew up around here know better, but these folks didn't.
