A thought just occurred to me the other day (based on the fact I don't really know that much about the EU)... What exactly is the benefit of the EU (and by extension the UK staying in it)? If the UK leaves the EU, will they still be members of the EC, or will they leave that too? Why is a political union that allows free movement considered a positive? This is a genuine question. I've really never looked into the EU.

Mainly, it's a common marketplace, where all members get favored status and we discuss common standards so we are stronger to discuss trade with powers like China or the US as a bloc... the EU is why we don't have merkin hormone filled and chlorine washed meat here.

eRv those links will give you some background so that you can discuss. This whole Brexit debate has polarised standpoints and allowed a mirage of myths to be created by the Leave campaign. I personally dont care one way or the other as it will hardly affect this country. We only have 3% of our trade with Britain mostly in the form of flowers so that can be easily diverted. If Britain feels that it can stand outside Europe fair enough let them find out. The trouble is that coming back will not be easy.

I think the question is not whether the EU is good or bad but who will benefit with Brexit? It will not be the average Brit that's for sure. Also will the UK survive a Brexit? I dont think Scotland is happy at the thought or Wales. Northern Ireland might even join up with the republic (that is not so impossible as you may think). Even England could split! Some people suggesting that the North could join Scotland leaving just the SE as a Little England permanently controlled by the tories.

I think it is mad for Britain to leave but it is not up to me as I dont have a vote anymore.

Lol, I'll let any Irish members we have left have the last word on this, but I doubt the Northern Counties are anywhere near ready to leave the UK and join the rest of the Republic, the proportion of voting Catholics may be higher now than it was a century ago, but I'm not sure that such a referendum, should it happen, would end with the Republicans winning.
