Iceland's refugee population was 79 in 2013, which is quite low even after considering that the island's total population stood at barely over 300,000. The intake quota have been increased to around 25 to 30 refugees per annum, and this is likely to increase again now as a result of a grass roots movement for more aid by its citizens.

The Icelandic government announced last week it was prepared to take in 50 people seeking asylum from countries such as Syria and Afghanistan over the next two years — but after overwhelming pressure from the public and both sides of politics, that quota could soon swell into the thousands.

At the heart of the push is a Facebook campaign by prominent Icelandic author Bryndis Bjorgvinsdottir, which in just 24 hours inspired 11,000 Icelanders to offer up their homes to people seeking asylum.

That number is rather on the low side, given that Australia's Evil One has said we are taking an extra 12,000 next year (albeit he was responding to public pressure before a by election...)

Just out of interest, Sælir, (no hidden agenda, just curious), how many refugees is Iceland taking? They can't get there by themselves (unlike mainland Europe), so presumably your government is taking a certain quota...

I bet zero, nobody uninterested in Norse history or North Atlantic fisheries has heard of Iceland, and it isn't e member of the EU, so even if we set quotas, they won't be concerned.

The pressure from citizens to take more (and to do so right away) is huge. We are hoping to take a lot more but only time will tell really (which is of course one of the things refugees really don't have a lot of in many cases).
Of course not all Icelanders are in on trying to take more of them but most of us are.

I wouldn't blame Iceland for taking no refugees.
It's a ludicrous idea, to take moslems from the middle east and stick them on an island in the atlantic.

If they want to help, they can easily find ways to help with the camps in Turkey and other nearby countries.

Open the doors, and you are dragging in all sorts, in numbers that Europe can't possibly cope with.

David Cameron has undertaken to take 20,000 Syrians over five years. That's just a fig for Angela Merkel, because pretty soon he will be begging her for EU concessions, that he can sell to the referendum voters as a victory, good enough to recommend that Britain stays in.
By promising renegotiation of EU terms, he's put himself in their hands. He can't afford to tell the world what he REALLY thinks of Merkel's migrant brainstorm.

Ok, so because you think nobody has heard of Iceland we don't have refugee quotas?

I don't see in what framework quotas would be assigned to you. There's talk of the UE assigning some to members, but you're not members, ergo, you're not concerned.
So any quotas you have are self determined .

Crimewatch was on again last night.
This month's featured crimes were again hugely dominated by immigrants. Especially the violence and sex crimes.

The ethnic British seemed to feature mainly in drugs and fraud inquiries.

I had a look last night, to see if there were any figures available anywhere, for comparison of crimes committed by various ethnic groups. You just can't find it anywhere. The figures are carefully compiled, so that no such comparison can be made.

One interesting thing on the news today though. Black people are three times as likely to be tasered.
The BBC gave it their usual slant, that black people are being targeted.
But what it really shows, is that black people are three times as likely to be so violent, that they need tasering. I know that, because I have several police officers in my close family, and they all say that they are heavily lean't on from above, to not discriminate in their treatment of suspects.

The media go on and on about black people being stopped and searched more often than whites.
But when black people are more likely to commit crime, to be violent, and live in high-crime areas, and belong to gangs, then that's always going to happen. And quite right too.

Merkel's folly is still dragging in the people, even in the dead of winter. There will be an explosion once it warms up.
These people aren't stupid. They know the chance won't last forever, so they will be on the road if they possibly can, before all the borders are slammed shut.

Meanwhile, Merkel is still stuttering her stupid rhetoric, although it's obvious she knows she's kakked her knickers.

They are promising Greece hundreds of millions of Euros now, to deal with the influx. Which means that they know the exit doors from Greece are about to be slammed shut.

But we all know what happens when Greece gets hundreds of millions.

Not quite as big as the burden that Assad and ISIS are putting on them! Don't know about you, but I don't like seeing children blown to pieces. I'd rather have a few more mouths to feed over here.

If it weren't for civilians, I'd support actually nuking ISIL, they deserve the most expeditious destruction we can muster.
