the NPR story is not related to glyphosate, also made by Bayer but not part of this story

Neonicotinoids are specifically designed to be toxic to insects. They are somewhat toxic to mammals and birds as well, and can be dangerous to aquatic life.

Many, many times worse than glyphosate.
