Correction: 90% of Australia is a sparsely populated land. Most of the infections happened in Melbourne (population 5 million), Sydney (population 5.5 million), Brisbane (population 2.5 million), Perth (population 2.1 million) and Adelaide (population 1.35 million). So you have two thirds of the Australian population living in five cities.
None of them are as big as Randstadt (population 8.2 million), but two of them come close. They are certainly bigger than Berlin (population 3.6 million) and Munich (population 1.5 million), neither of which have managed to bring the Covid outbreaks under control. That's why Berlin has introduced a hard lockdown a couple of days ago and Munich's starts today.
Lockdowns worked for Australia and New Zealand because people largely obeyed the regulations. The statistics are pretty good evidence for them. JFCOAPS indeed.
