Regardless of what you think global warming is not a matter of ideology or belief. It's simply a matter of atmospheric chemistry, the available data, and scientific consensus.
It's not about science - that part is just the fact of global warming. As I said, that's something that has been known about for decades.

It's the tax solution, and a bunch of folks insisting that their method of pissing away that tax revenue will have a positive effect...that sounds like church bullshit to me.

Yesterday? Because it doesn't matter. He said it - or didn't - my life (or opinions) don't change significantly.

It would be like if someone claimed you had called Trump an orange, small-handed jackass. I don't doubt it, don't need to check (unless it gets important)

How else do you imagine it working? Not the fucking free market, I hope.
The way Asimov put it, if we do everything, the climate will change. If we do nothing, the climate will change.

I will be focusing on being ready for a changing climate. You churchgoers will be praying (paying) to your icons to change the climate.

Will you prepare to live in a changing climate? Or will you just pay the carbon tax and carry on?

Asimov actually wrote a book on it. Our Angry Earth.

I'm all for fighting climate change through effective policy making, but this carbon tax does nothing but add another $20 to my monthly heating bill and I have a small house.

It also emboldens government to tax more. That's what tax is - an addictive substance.

At least we'll get more tubby bureaucrats out of it.

Yes, the climate will change with or without our influence. That is a valid point. It is also true that we can bring about certain changes or accelerate others. Therefore it makes sense to prepare, and to seek to stop contributing to negative changes.

I'm into good suggestions. I recycle, I use half the diesel to heat my home than the other small homes around me. I turn lights off. I generally use less.

Fuck, pErvinalia just told me that Germany was doing well. Not saying that because he was right or wrong, but because the information isn't nearly as clear as one would think.

As Peter Rez at Arizona State University discusses, renewables will not make much of a dent in their total carbon emissions. The problem is that even when renewables produce enough energy to supply all of the country’s electricity, the variability of the renewables means Germany has to keep the coal plants running, over half of which use the dirtiest of all coal, lignite.
Look to France for how these new policies are affecting the citizens.

For me, I think the government is overfed already. Giving them another reason to tax everyone won't improve anything but the size of the bureaucracy.

I'd like to overhaul transportation. I don't know how big the impact would be or how long it would take to see any return on the investment, it just seems like a really good idea to me. Houston is huge and the majority is forced to drive everywhere. Most driveways have multiple cars in them as a result.

So, while I may not want to pay a carbon tax, I'd be happy to start contributing to a real revolution in transportation.

But it seems to me that we lack the will to even imagine a radical change to how we get around.

There is a radical new way to get around. It's called public transit. You will find that MANY of those promoting the 'pay more tax to save the earth' proponents simply can't get onto public transport. It's full of dirty people. Workers. Homeless...you seriously can't expect politicians to use it. They wouldn't be SAFE.

If you have a vehicle, and don't know what time your local bus stops, you might be part of the problem.

So next time someone supports a carbon tax, whether it is a politician, activist or neighbour, see if they know their local transit system. If they don't, I think its safe to say that they don't care in a personal way, just a political one.

Yeah right, except public transportation sucks for other reasons, namely availability.

I'm going to assume your comment about not wanting to use public transportation because of dirty folk is just a result of you being a country bumpkin who's probably only got one bus in town anyway, and the stop for it is at the end of the street you all live on.

I took a bus to Golden Gate Park once. I suspect the other passengers were on their way to the merhadone clinic. It was memorable.

 We have an extensive system here. But the city is just too spread out, so it still can't accommodate everyone.

I'd like to see something amazing done with it. But we lack the will.
