Putin has formally recognised the independence of the break away regions...

At the risk of this idea sounding like appeasement of Russia, perhaps Ukraine should accept the formal loss of those regions (and Crimea) as a fait accompli, given that from all accounts, a majority of the Russian speakers in those regions want ties with Russia as independent republics. The quid pro quo could be a formal treaty between Russia and Ukraine, recognising existing borders, a promise of no invasion and a withdrawal of Russian troops from the border areas.

Realpolitik...yeah ..might work but does not address the fundamental issue underlying all this is the encroachment of NATO on Russian buffer states.

US would not put up with it in Cuba and elsewhere ...Russia not having it in Ukraine, China not having it in Taiwan. If you go back further to the Monroe Doctrine then regional dominance was a stated goal and often undertaken by odious means ( Hawaii ).
