In 1995, I wrote a book that called Rush Limbaugh “a Big Fat Idiot.” While the book was satiric, its intent was entirely serious. Limbaugh had been first to exploit a little-noticed repeal of the Fairness Doctrine by the Federal Communications Commission. Adopted in 1949, the rule required broadcasters to present controversial issues in a fair and balanced manner. The doctrine’s repeal in 1987 cleared the way for disreputable broadcasters to present manifestly dishonest and unbalanced content, and Rush, it turned out, had a real talent for just that kind of thing.


Before long, Limbaugh had attracted an audience of 20 million a day by spewing wildly racist, xenophobic and sexist bile and wildly untrue twaddle about everything from climate to tobacco to the number of murders committed by Bill and Hillary Clinton. Like Father Coughlin, who regaled his millions of loyal radio listeners with anti-Semitic and isolationist propaganda in the lead-up to World War II, Limbaugh became a huge political force. After the 1994 midterms, when House Republicans were swept into the majority for the first time in 40 years, the new speaker, Newt Gingrich, named Rush an honorary member of the class of 1995.

Four years ago, many Americans were puzzled to learn that a not-small number of Trump supporters believed that a not-small number of Democrats were blood-sucking pedophiles holding children captive in the basement of a Washington pizza parlor. This fall, when YouGov put specific QAnon allegations to voters in a survey, fully half of Trump supporters said they thought Democrats were involved in elite sex-trafficking rings, while another third said they weren’t sure.

So, it looks like Biden's climate policy promises may be at odds with the people named likely to become secretary of energy.

Biden has picked Dr. Arun Majumdar https://profiles.stanford.edu/arun-majumdar to lead the energy transition team, and I don't see where he has the same connections to fossil fuels as some of the other possible picks.

Of course, I don't know exactly why the others would be awful just because they have connections to fossil fuels. By that criteria alone we would disqualify a lot of really experienced people who may also care a lot about clean energy. For example, Dr. Ernest Moniz, who has been named as a potential Biden pick, and who was mentioned in the article above for his stance on keeping natural gas going, also happens to be a part of a group of investors in clean energy, Lime Rock New Energy, https://www.lrnewenergy.com/#what-we-are-looking-for

We are exclusively focused on companies that help their customers produce or consume energy with a measurable, positive environmental impact.

But only his connections to gas were mentioned in the previous article.

Farm Group Policy Asks

The next agriculture secretary must be a “strong one,” said American Farm Bureau Federation President Zippy Duvall, describing the ideal choice as “a good leader, a good communicator, one that’s willing to work with the people of our industry,” preferably with a background in agriculture.

Duvall’s group hopes the Biden administration focuses on regulatory changes, improvements to programs covered by the farm bill, rural broadband expansion, and farm labor, along with greater market and trade access.

“Our farmers, they don’t want government checks. They want to get their income from the marketplace,” Duvall said. “The only way for us to do that is to be able to trade with the rest of the world.”

He added that “the biggest thing” the Trump administration did was acknowledge farmers and ranchers, as “it’s been difficult over several administrations to actually get a seat at the table.”
