Merkle sparkels.

This is the first time I've seen a photo of her where she just about smiles.

Plans are already afoot to return her brain to the German norm. A suitable donor has been sourced...

Seriously, people?
You are against those people moving away from refugee camps in Turkey and surrounding countries?
Do you have any idea how life must be there? And they are not allowed to work or anything so they can do nothing to improve their lives.
When they come to other countries as refugees they can start to build up their lives again.

No, let´s make them wait by the border of the country they are fleeing because hopefully there will be peace there one day :fp:

And saying that by building up companies they are taking jobs from others? NO! The communities get bigger and need more service!

And why on earth would you think that most of those people are uneducated? Syria was not a cave community!

Reading this makes me sick!

Not all of us are opposed to helping these people, Sælir. Just a few of the loud ones. :tea:

You don't seem to understand the term refugee at all.
It's about safety, and nothing else. People are in imminent danger, you give them a chance to escape.

How pleasant or unpleasant the camps are is irrelevant to the refugee process.
How many people do you think there are, in the world, living miserable lives? Are you going to take them all in Iceland?
What about the people scraping a living in Brazilian garbage dumps. They are worse off than the people in the refugee camps. If it's just living conditions that gets you blubbering, you will end up with millions on your doorstep.

In any case, the Hungarian interior minister said yesterday, that of all the people in Hungary, trying to get to Germany, only ONE THIRD claimed to have come from Syria. The rest have just come from poor countries because they heard that they doors in Europe had been flung open.

They might be educated but if they are pro-ISIS that'll make them even more dangerous. Sweden and Denmark have closed their borders. Merkel might dream of sharing her flock of mis-shapes but it is unlikely the rest of Europe will want in on that. We are taking 20,000 over five years and that is too many given the housing shortage here IMO. They should stay in Turkey or where-ever is closest, culturally and geographically, to Syria so they can return home as soon as the war is over.

You are still a refugee even if you are not in imminent danger if you are in danger when returning to your home country. You cannot go back and therefore you are a refugee.

I know there are many people living miserable lives in the world. The difference between them and refugees would be that there is a chance for (theoretically) to make their lives better. They are allowed to work in the country they are in. Refugees are not. They cannot make their lives better.

This is a silly argument. A refugee is someone who needs refuge. Not someone who already has it. :D
Otherwise, once you've been granted refuge, you can just turn up in any country you choose, and demand "refuge", when you already have "refuge".

You are of course entitled to your opinion. But it's easy to be charitable with other peoples' country, and time and money.

Ok, so you think it's enough for people to have shelter and then all is good?
That is extremely naive.

Costs me fuck all? I am sorry, is Germany the only country taking in refugees?
I can tell you that I will be paying for refugees and I am quite happy to do so.
How on earth do you think you can say it will cost me "fuck all"?

Just out of interest, Sælir, (no hidden agenda, just curious), how many refugees is Iceland taking? They can't get there by themselves (unlike mainland Europe), so presumably your government is taking a certain quota...

Iceland's refugee population was 79 in 2013, which is quite low even after considering that the island's total population stood at barely over 300,000. The intake quota have been increased to around 25 to 30 refugees per annum, and this is likely to increase again now as a result of a grass roots movement for more aid by its citizens.
The Icelandic government announced last week it was prepared to take in 50 people seeking asylum from countries such as Syria and Afghanistan over the next two years — but after overwhelming pressure from the public and both sides of politics, that quota could soon swell into the thousands.

At the heart of the push is a Facebook campaign by prominent Icelandic author Bryndis Bjorgvinsdottir, which in just 24 hours inspired 11,000 Icelanders to offer up their homes to people seeking asylum.
