How will this put the financially challenged students off applying? Over the last 20 years, more and more people have gone to do degrees. When I did mine (just dropping that in, obviously) far fewer students studied to degree level. It is impossible to pay tuition fees for so many students now. What's wrong with paying for higher education, getting a better job and paying it back? If I have missed a point, please feel free to offer a contrasting opinion.

Now you can all hit me. :what?:
Because it sets you pack that much. You are 21 grand behind getting a house, getting a car, starting a family etc. etc. etc.
But 21 grand is reasonable, you can pay that in as little as two, three years depending on how you budget.

You treble that, 21 grand becomes 63.
Hmm. I am considering my position on the matter, while watching riot footage on the 10 oclock news. Pretty violent. Little shits just loved the opportunity to throw stuff, really.
The little shits are the pigs and government, not the people.

I'm not really up on riots in the UK, how bad was this in comparison with, say, a major football match? New Years Eve?

There was a bonfire away from the buildings and there was lot of broken glass. ONE person threw a fire extinguisher. It's not what I'd consider a proper riot.
What I've found with a few discussions I've had lately is this self-satisfaction that people express with their proffessed open mindedness. In realty it ammounts to wilful ignorance and intellectual cowardice as they are choosing to not form any sort of opinion on a particular topic. Basically "I don't know and I'm not going to look at any evidence because I'm quite happy on this fence."

I forgot what else I was going to say, except that I voted Liberal (because I couldn't possibly stomach voting either Labour or Conservative), and I feel betrayed.
Carry on.

It was quite a rioty riot as far as riots go. Not as rioty as the Toxteth riots. They were the days :sighsm: when I thought riots were likely to change things. ;ob; ;ob; ;ob; ;ob; ;ob; ;ob; :nono:

Or ... novel idea this ... you could vote against the politicians responsible. The next UK general election won't be for a long while, but there will be plenty of other opportunities to express displeasure.

The Lib. Dems. are junior coalition partners. Obviously, they have to compromise on some things, give in on others. That's Realpolitik, baby. Here in Ireland, "free" fees - such as they are - are likely to get the chop as well in few weeks. We're so deep in the financial mire that this is going to be far from the most pressing issue on the agenda. Whether or not you think it's right or wrong on a philosophical or ideological level* is nearly besides the point at this stage. The kitty is empty.

And all the protests - at times violent - in France recently ... did they succeed in stopping the retirement age from being raised?

*And I, as a beneficiary of free fees that have long since been paid back several times over in income tax and other contributions, and a University employee to boot ... well, I've got mixed views. :levi:

I like ;this: You are very wise. I suppose the only thing that violent protest achieves is 'getting stuff off your chest', which has quite a lot to say for it, but I am not generally in favour of innocent people being killed, which can happen.

I'm not in favour of violent protest full stop (violence in self-defence is another matter). Any society that caves in to violence - or the threat of violence - has got real problems.

And (again) coming from Ireland, I know a bit about that as well.

We're having financial strategy virtually dictated to us at the moment, and not without good reason. A lot of people pursuing a lot of different agendas - it's not just the "fat cats" got us into it. I'm going to spend the rest of my working life - which is likely to be forcibly extended by a couple of years - trying to help us get out of a far worse mess than the UK is in.
