Isn't that because the rest of the world is eating more like Americans,ie, fast food?Coito ergo sum wrote:The same thing is happening in a lot of other countries. The difference is that the UK, Mexico, Australia, Slovakia and Greece all have universal healthcare, so if people continue to burden the health service with obesity related issues then the government has no choice but to step in or let the health service go bust.Coito ergo sum wrote:The same thing is happening in a lot of other countries. It is quite sad. The "obesity" rate in the US is now 30%. The "overweight" rate is now something like 66%. About 2/3 of the entire US population is overweight. Almost 1/3 is obese.born-again-atheist wrote:Following the fine American example of 'brain off, mouth open'.

It is quite sad indeed.
I almost chuckle, though, when I hear people complain about the "unreasonable body image" portrayed by magazines and other media and how young girls feel they "have to" keep up with these "rail thin" models.....heck, it doesn't look like people are paying ANY attention to the rail thin models. Being overweight is just fine and dandy here in the States, apparently, given that 2/3 of the population have gone that way.
That may also give us some indication of the impact of the media on behavior. We are told that we are inundated with "too thin" images, and unreasonable images, that make us all want to be "too thin." Yet, hardly any of us are thin at all, let alone "too thin."
It's like Frank Zappa said when testifying before Congress about the PMRC and the Gore attempt to censor music in the 1980s when they said that songs about suicide make people kill themselves, and songs about violence make people violent - He said, "There are more love songs than anything else. If songs could make you do something we'd all love one another." And, "I wrote a song about dental floss, but did anybody's teeth get cleaner?"
Think about this whole Ronald McDonald nonsense from that standpoint - it's just another Parents Music Resource Center and Tipper Gore pile of bullshit claiming that statements on t.v. or in the media are causing people to do X, Y, or Z. In the 80s, it said that kids got violent because of songs. Now it's kids getting fat because of Ronald McDonald.

What about parents!
If they did their damn job and said NO tonight we are eating at home or what ever the fuck they want.
12 year olds generally do not have much spare change they earned kicking around for Mcdonalds...
Where and how do these preteens get so much Mcds? Idiot parents who are willing to let them selves give in to their impressionable kids.
Dont ban Ronald!
Ban dumb parents from raising kids!

Advertisers would not spend the millions they do if it didn't affect the bottom line, their profit. You seem to take the view that it is 'every man for himself', 'devil take the hindmost' and everything is fair in love, war and marketing. Fucking Ronald McFuckingDonald is not a children's character - it is a cynical device used to sell crap fat filled food to children. No ambiguity about it.
If individuals were able to cope and the epidemic of obesity was to be avoided..well would it not have by now? What are you waiting for in terms of a signal that it is OK for society collectively to intervene and that if you die from eating too many burgers sold to you by a shitfaced clown it is your own damned fault?

Many people think that Tinky Winky Teletubby and Spongebob Squarepants are bad for children. So what?
That depends. Just because there is an epidemic of obesity doesn't mean that it's the product of advertising.Rum wrote:

As I posted above, what appears to be a more likely cause is the NUMBER OF HOURS spent by children in front of T.V.s and computers and not the material that is actually being broadcast.
Freedom requires that we be allowed to do as we please with our own bodies, and if a person chooses to drink alcohol, take drugs, or feed themselves too many burgers, then so be it. Parents are responsible for their own children, and if the society you desire is one where the State portions out your food for you, then feel free to advocate that all you like.Rum wrote:

Once again - if the problem is the number of hours kids are spending in front of the t.v. (up 40% since 1960) and the number of calories they are taking in (up 8% since since 1979), then perhaps - just perhaps - it has nothing whatsoever to do with what commercials are playing. Maybe it has something to do with the six (6) hours of sedentary time, on average, kids are engaged in these days, plus an 8% increase in food intake....more food...less activity....gee fucking wiz, dude - do you think there might be a cause of increased weight gain in there somewhere?

Re: Ban Ronald McDonald?
Coito - this is a classic libertarian vs liberal socialist debate. You opt for the 'total freedom' option where each individual looks out for themselves and I, personally. would prefer to collectively do something to protect the most vulnerable and potentially vulnerable in society. Children, being sent sophisticated messages about what to consume, strike me, I think not unreasonably, as vulnerable. I would want to do something to make sure that they were not taken advantage of.
Unless of course you think children should be available to be exploited in the name of liberty and freedom?

Clowns are evil.
Clowns are sinister men that paint smiles on their faces to get close to children.
Clowns disguise their true identities for a reason.
I can't possibly think of a more appropriate face for McDonalds.
