Thing is though, women do love to be muses to creative geniuses, many would die for this. If he is an artist, poet, celebrity director, university professor, whatever else elevated-sounding, this in itself is attractive enough to overshadow unattractive physical or character features of the fact that he is taken. I think many of these harassed women fall into this tried and tested trap of being led to think they are the one and only because their vagina is simply magical and they are muses. And some of them did get cast and launched into their careers. Mila Jovovic is lovely to look at, but really, what memorable roles did she play? She was elevated to the status of wife but hey, how many starlets can a director marry? I am not saying they are trading sex for roles, I am saying they are being led to believed they are auditioning for much bigger life game roles, who can say no to that?

Neil deGrasse Tyson has responded to the latest allegations, and apologized for creeping the two women out. Whether the most zealous Erinyes will find this believable or acceptable remains to be seen.

'On Being Accused'

I’ve recently been publically accused of sexual misconduct. These accusations have received a fair amount of press in the past forty-eight hours, unaccompanied by my reactions. In many cases, it’s not the media’s fault. I declined comment on the grounds that serious accusations should not be adjudicated in the press. But clearly I cannot continue to stay silent. So below I offer my account of each accusation.

Yesterday, allegations of sexual misconduct against scientist and celebrity Neil deGrasse Tyson came to light. Two women have accused him of inappropriate behavior towards them, including touching them without their consent and trying to seduce them. This comes on the heels of an accusation that Tyson raped a woman while they were both grad students, which had widely flown under the radar.

Those two allegations are are embarrassing, to the women making them.

The first, is an allegation that a woman approached Tyson for a photo, and she showed him her tattoo of the solar system. He excitedly wanted to see it, because not too long before he had been instrumental in demoting Pluto to dwarf planet. He jokingly said something like asking if she had pluto included, and he touched her arm. She was wearing a sleeveless dress, and the allegation is that he followed the tattoo which went into her shoulder a bit.

In the other, we have Tyson inviting a woman to his apartment for a couple of hours of wine and cheese and conversation. He never actually makes a move on her (and even if he had, what's wrong with that? An adult making a pass at another adult is now a big no-no?) The worst thing he did was give her some stupid extended handshake. Tyson reports that this person considered herself a "hugger" and always wanted to hug him, and that he tried to avoid all the hugs. Maybe true, maybe not. Who cares? Nobody here did anything wrong, even accepting the allegations of the women as true.

The allegations are absurd. And, they're absurd not because I think the women are lying. They're absurd if one assumes they're telling the truth.

The rape claim from the 1980s is, of course, of a much different character. If true, then it's a serious crime. However, there is little anyone can do with 30 year old allegations with no forensic evidence, no witnesses, etc. The accuser is sort of a nutcase, if you look at her websites - some natureopathy guru who thinks she meets "goddesses." Doesn't mean she's lying - who knows -- she says Tyson gave her a glass of water and she doesn't remember what happened, but she woke up and he fucked her. Not sure what anyone can do with that kind of allegation. I guess fire the guy - there are plenty of other candidates for Natural History Museum curator and Cosmos narrator who haven't been accused of decades old sex crime, and touching a woman's arm.
