Littering is a complex issue. Clearly, a significant part of the problem is lazy, thoughtless people who cannot be bothered disposing of rubbish properly (hopefully into bins for recycling). But yes, another significant issue is the production of single-use packaging by both corporations and small business. If this single use packaging is, for example, cardboard, then at least it is either recyclable or at the very leat, biodegradable in the environment. If it is single use plastic, so much the worse.

But the logo thing is a minor part of the issue.

The litter is as predictable as footprints, and while I don't share your opinion that it is only the lazy and thoughtless, I think we agree that all the members of the rainbow coalition likely understand corporate attention-whoring.

The predictably littering humans may be a problem, but corporations knowing that it is worth advertising on that litter, is extra gross.

Especially when people blame the 'litterbugs', while forgetting to blame the assholes putting their corporate logo on the trash.

What does it matter whether a corporation puts its logo on its packaging or not?

Nearly all animals leave litter behind. Some humans make an effort to keep their home areas clean, but all cities, for example, have to send around people to pick up litter.

Bad enough, but some marketing specialist decided that it was worth hanging their logo on litter.

The word "litter" is not a synonym for "trash".
litter: noun 1. trash, such as paper, cans, and bottles, that is left lying in an open or public place.

The waste materials of modern technological society are a real problem, whether they are irresponsibly left in the streets by morons, or placed in trash/recycling containers by more responsible humans. As I said before, the problems need to be addressed by both better private behaviour, controls on the manufacture of single use disposable packaging and better and more environmentally responsible waste management systems.

The logos do not increase the amount of litter created by single-use packaging.

I would like to see a return of multi-use containers, along with an additional charge on the product that will be refunded when the container is returned to shops who sell it, or to general recycling depots. This worked very well until Coca Cola and other companies switched from selling their drinks in reusable containers to steel cans and eventually to aluminium cans. Even if many people just could not be bothered to return their glass bottles and left it by the roadside or wherever else, children would swoop on them and pocket the refunded deposit.

We have reusable plastic bottles, with a deposit. It's a shit system.

I'm with you on multi-use, but would go a lot futher: make amazon pay for, hold, and dispose of all product packaging.

They are better placed to solve big problems than the customers they use. Picture it - you buy a running watch to join me on virtual races, the amazon delivery person brings it to your door, you open the package, take the watch, and the delivery person keeps the shipping package.

For re-use, disposal or whatever. If Amazon is forced to solve that problem, they WILL be efficient.

The logos don't increase the amount of litter, but it still grosses me out that they put their logo on it - AND IT IS EFFECTIVE.

Fucking monkeys.

One of the arguments for the Brewers Retail outlets here in Ontario (a retail monopoly of the big three brewers in the province) is that the returns program has over a 90% recovery rate in bottles. This outstrips any recycling program. It was a similar percentage before Coca Cola and Pepsi convinced the province to ditch bottle deposit program and go the blue box recycling route. In other words corporations advocated for a public program funded by the public purse, completely off loading their liability from an effective waste recovery program, and the environment suffered. Quelle surprise

Cool. But let's "blame the assholes putting their corporate logo on the trash" for the litter problem anyway.

Not what I said, but I don't blame you for trying to find something to claim I'm wrong about.

The litter is bad, lets say a '10-level' bad. The corporations printing their logos on the trash, knowing it will be littered about by 'bad humans' is a higher kind of bad. I would say '100-level' bad.

But yeah, keep pretending I'm taking a position I'm not.
