If I had any expectations of better things from humanity, that article would be depressing. I think he might be correct, though. It's hard to escape the conclusion that the average person does need religion of some sort to provide pat answers to difficult questions. Most people prefer not address the sort of questions that religion answers at all, but sooner or later they come up against them. When that happens they're often not capable of coming to grips with the issues, and not willing to try to face them personally. So much easier and more comfortable to have the spoon-fed ready-made and more or less acceptable doctrine of the religion to hand, and get on with your life.

I stop short of cheering on a resurgence of Christianity, despite the above.

I think I did once, but I avoid almost all the links here. There was a good shop table build recently, but the 'wins' are few and far between. If someone can't summarize the relevance, it's even less interesting.
